LEADIN:
A theatre costume maker in Australia is recycling waste to create her stage costumes.
It's a bid to help combat the major threat to the environment by textile wastage and the rise of "fast fashion".
STORYLINE:
Where others see trash, Melbourne-based costume maker Rhiannon Irving sees gems.
Fish-shaped soy sauce containers become necklaces, old curtains turn into capes fit for a king and bed covers are fashioned into Elizabethan-era skirts.
"I just heard about the insane quantities that get sent daily to landfill from the textiles industry and it just feels like it's not necessary," says Irving.
And her venture has had a positive response in her industry.
The Melbourne Shakespeare Company commissioned 30 costumes from her for their production of 'The Taming of the Shrew'.
All the costumes are made of disposable plastics and used fabrics.
For Irving, the idea is to show that great looking costumes don't have to be made from new materials.
"Maybe this isn't just about being creative with materials anymore. Maybe this is a way to utilise otherwise disposable items and just showing that things could have another life in some way," she says.
And Irving doesn't just save on fabrics.
One metre of new fabric can cost up to 20 Australian dollars (about 13 US dollars) where six metres of second hand bed covers cost about the same.
The costume maker started recycling in her work when she learnt how much textile landfill contributed to greenhouse gases.
In 2018, a group of scientists concluded that fashion was responsible for eight percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is almost the same as the European Union.
For Melbourne Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Jennifer Sarah Dean, waste in the theatre world is a big issue.
She welcomed Irving's initiative with open arms.
"We've had such a wonderful response from the cast, from the crew, everybody is so passionate about this. It's definitely something we'll continue," she says.
The Melbourne Shakespeare Company is also trying to cut on energy usage by trialing rechargeable battery-powered lights.
Jennifer Sarah Dean hopes her company's sustainable shift will encourage others.
For Irving, the ultimate goal is for future generations to turn her isolated initiative into the norm.
"I really want upcoming generations of costumers to see that there are interesting things we could be doing to solve sustainability and waste issues," she says.
