"To win indeed, I expect to win the elections, to be the first woman president of Macedonia (North Macedonia). I am ashamed that previously there was not such chance, there was no woman prime-minister , there was no woman president of the parliament. So, that's our chance. The time of women is coming, spring time is the right time for victory and I expect to win the elections."

STORYLINE:
Voters went to the polls in North Macedonia on Sunday for a first round of presidential elections seen as key test of the government following deep polarization after the country changed its name to end a decades-old dispute with neighbouring Greece over the use of the term "Macedonia".
The name change, which paved the way for North Macedonia to eventually join NATO and the European Union, has emerged as the main issue of the campaign, with one of the two front-runners vowing to challenge the agreement in the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
More than 3,400 polling stations were opened at 0700 local time (0500 GMT) and will close at 1900 (1700GMT). Election authorities said the turnout up to 1300 was 20.45 % from a total 1.8 million registered voters.
Three university law professors, including one from the country's ethnic Albanian minority, are vying for the largely ceremonial post.
Gordana Siljanovska Davkova , a vocal opponent of the name deal with Greece and backed by main conservative opposition VMRO-DPMNE party, said she fully expected to become the nation's first woman president.
Stevo Pendarovski, a joint candidate of the ruling Social-democrats and 30 other parties, told the media after casting his vote that he expected to go into a second round of elections on 5 May with a clear advantage.
A strong supporter of the name deal with Grecee, he said North Macedonia would become a full member of NATO and the European Union.
Blerim Reka, an ethnic Albanian,  supported by two small ethnic Albanian political parties expressed hope that North Macedonia would prove it was ready to start accession talks with the EU.
