"This is part of our 'Project Sunrise' and this is the first of three test flights that is going to come up with recommendations about how we manage pilot fatigue, how we actually manage passenger jet-lag and after 19 hours on the flight, I think we have got this right. I feel like we have been on a flight a lot shorter than that, I feel refreshed, feel great, and talking to all of the passengers that was the common commentary that come from it."

"The flight was very successful from two components - the first one was research. We are researching the effects of the long flights, the ultra-long haul flying on our crews. We are getting a lot of data that is going to be analyzed over the coming weeks and months. And also the feat of distance - that flight last night was 16,200 kilometres (10,066 miles). We were airborne for 19 hours and 16 minutes, and we landed here in Sydney with a comfortable 70 minutes of fuel. So there was no doubt, and that was also against stronger head winds than we'd actually forecast."

STORYLINE:
Australia's Qantas has completed the first non-stop commercial flight from New York to Sydney, which was used to run a series of tests to assess the effects of ultra long-haul flights on crew fatigue and passenger jet leg.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner touched down in Sydney early Sunday morning after a flight of 19 hours and 16 minutes - the world's longest.
"This is a really historic moment for Qantas, a really historic moment for Australian aviation and a really historic moment for world aviation. We are the first commercial airline to fly non-stop from New York to Sydney," Qantas CEO, Alan Joyce said.
Qantas says tests ranged from monitoring pilot brain waves, melatonin levels and alertness to exercise classes for passengers.
A total of 49 people were on board.
Captain Sean Golding, who led the four pilots, said "We are researching the effects of the long flights, the ultra-long haul flying on our crews. We are getting a lot of data that is going to be analyzed over the coming weeks and months."
