STORYLINE:
ALBERT FINNEY, RIP TORN, DORIS DAY AND PETER FONDA AMONG THE STARS WHO DIED IN 2019
February 2019 began with the sad news that veteran British actor Albert Finney, star of films like "Tom Jones" and "Skyfall," had died. He was 82.
Finney was a rare star who managed to avoid the Hollywood limelight for more than five decades after bursting to international fame in 1963 in the title role of "Tom Jones."
A week later, on 16 February, Swiss actor Bruno Ganz, who famously played Adolf Hitler trapped in his Berlin bunker in "Downfall" and an angel in Wim Wenders' "Wings of Desire," died aged 77.
Ganz, a prominent figure in the German-language theater world, shifted into movies in the 1970s, appearing in Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu" and Wenders' "The American Friend" among others. In one of his more recent appearances, he starred as Sigmund Freund in "The Tobacconist," released in 2018.
Chanel's iconic couturier, Karl Lagerfeld, whose accomplished designs as well as trademark white ponytail, high starched collars and dark enigmatic glasses dominated high fashion for the past 50 years died on 19 February. He was around 85-years-old.
Such was the enigma surrounding the German-born designer that his age was a point of mystery for decades, with reports he had two birth certificates, one dated 1933 and the other 1938.  In 2013, Lagerfeld told French magazine "Paris Match" he was born in 1935, but in 2019 his assistant still didn't know the truth - telling AP he liked "to scramble the tracks on his year of birth - that's part of the character."
At the end of February, Andre Previn, the pianist, composer and conductor whose broad reach took in the worlds of Hollywood, jazz and classical music died aged 89.
Previn was a child prodigy whose family fled Nazi Germany. As a teenager, he found work as a composer and arranger in the musical sweatshops of Hollywood, mostly at MGM, winning four Oscars for his orchestrations of such stylish musicals as 1964's "My Fair Lady."
He then abandoned Hollywood for a career as a classical conductor.
March began with the shocking news that Keith Flint, lead singer of dance-electronic band The Prodigy, had been found dead at his home near London. He was 49.
Flint was the stage persona of the band, whose hits "Firestarter" and "Breathe" fused techno, breakbeat and acid house music. The band sold 30 million records, taking rave music from an insular community of party-goers and bringing it to an international audience.
On the same day, Luke Perry, who gained instant heartthrob status as wealthy rebel Dylan McKay on "Beverly Hills, 90210," died after suffering a massive stroke. He was 52.
Born and raised in rural Fredericktown, Ohio, Perry gained fame on "Beverly Hills, 90210," which ran from 1990 to 2000.
Perry has had roles in a handful of films, including "The Fifth Element," ''8 Seconds" and "American Strays." He appeared in HBO's prison drama "Oz" and voiced cartoons like "The Incredible Hulk" and "Mortal Kombat." In recent years he starred in the series "Ties That Bind" and "Body of Proof."
Agnes Varda died on 29 March at the age of 90. The French filmmaker helped shape the French New Wave movement throughout the 1960s.
Nipsey Hussle, the skilled and respected rapper who earned a Grammy nomination for his major-label debut and was heavily respected in South Los Angeles where he grew up, died on 31 March. He was 33.
Character actors aren't often called larger-than-life, but Seymour Cassel was just that. The live-wire pillar of independent film known for his frequent collaborations with John Cassavetes and Wes Anderson, died at 84 on 7 April.
Actor Peter Mayhew, who played shaggy, towering Chewbacca in several of the "Star Wars" films, died on 2 May. He was 74.
Doris Day, whose wholesome screen presence stood for a time of innocence in '60s films, died on 13 May. She was 97.
She was known for her honey-voiced singer and actress whose film dramas, musicals and innocent sex comedies made her a top star in the 1950s and '60s and among the most popular screen actresses in history.
Beth Chapman, the brash, buxom and blonde wife and co-star of "Dog the Bounty Hunter" reality TV star Duane "Dog" Chapman died on 26 June after an almost two-year battle with cancer. She was 51.
Rip Torn, the free-spirited Texan who overcame his quirky name to become a distinguished actor in theatre, television and movies and win an Emmy in his 60s for his comedy turn on TV's "The Larry Sanders Show," died on 10 July. He was 88.
Dutch film actor Rutger Hauer, who specialized in menacing roles, including a memorable turn as a murderous android in "Blade Runner" opposite Harrison Ford, died on 19 July. He was 75.
Hauer's roles included a terrorist in "Nighthawks" with Sylvester Stallone, a former CEO of Wayne Enterprises in "Batman Begins," and he was in the big-budget 1985 fantasy "Ladyhawke." He won a supporting-actor Golden Globe award in 1988 for "Escape from Sobibor."
Actor Peter Fonda, the son of a Hollywood legend who became a movie star in his own right after both writing and starring in the counter-culture classic "Easy Rider,'' died on 16 August 2019. He was 79.
Ric Ocasek, famed frontman for The Cars, was found dead in a Manhattan apartment on 16 September.
The Cars chart-topping hits in the late 1970s and 1980s included "Just What I Needed," ''Shake It Up" and "Drive." The band was inducted last year into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Ginger Baker, the volatile and propulsive British musician who was best known for his time with the power trio Cream, died at 80, on 6 October. Baker wielded his blues power and jazz technique to help break open popular music and become one of the world's most admired and feared musicians.
Robert Forster, the handsome and omnipresent character actor who got a career resurgence and Oscar nomination for playing bail bondsman Max Cherry in "Jackie Brown," died 11 October. He was 78. His "Jackie Brown" co-star Samuel L. Jackson tweeted that Forster was "truly a class act/Actor!!"
South Korean pop star and actress Sulli was found dead on 14 October at her home south of Seoul.
Sulli's legal name was Choi Jin-ri. She began her singing career in 2009 as a member of the girl band "f(x)" and also acted in numerous television dramas and movies.
Robert Evans, the producer of "Chinatown" who helped shepherd countless seminal films including "The Godfather" and "Harold and Maude" to the screen as chief of Paramount Pictures, died 26 October. He was 89.
During Evans' tenure running Paramount, he resurrected the studio with films including "Rosemary's Baby," ''Serpico" and "The Godfather," parts one and two.
Evans continued the drama off screen by marrying some of the industry's most glamorous women. He was married seven times. His wives included actresses Ali MacGraw and Catherine Oxenberg and former Miss America Phyllis George.
