2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeremy Hunt, British Foreign Secretary:
(Reporter off-camera: "Foreign Secretary, we understand that the deployment of HMS Duncan has now been brought forward, giving the growing tensions in the Gulf. Is this a sign that the UK is going to join the coalition that the US has been talking about?")
"We take maritime security very seriously indeed. It is our primary responsibility to protect British shipping but actually the global superhighway is really the oceans and waterways of the world so we do that in all parts of the world. We are obviously being, I'm being briefed the whole time as to what is happening. This is a situation that is changing every hour. But we are reacting to what is happening in a measured and careful way and we're being clear to Iran that we are not seeking to escalate the situation. The reason the Grace 1 was seized was because of the destination it was going - it was going to Syria - that is a clear breach of sanctions. It wasn't because it was coming from Iran. We want to find a way to resolve this in a way that means sanctions against a regime in Syria that's used chemical weapons against its own people are not breached."
(Reporter off-camera: "Do you think the coalition that the US is proposing could be on itself an escalation or perceived as such?")
"We talk to all our allies around the world, including the United States including the Europeans - all of us have a shared interest in keeping the waterways and seaways of the world open for business. None of us are looking for a conflict and we all have a responsibility to protect shipping. This is a time for cool heads - I'm being briefed on an hourly basis as to what's going on and we want to do everything we can to make sure we don't have an unintended escalation which could be very dangerous for the world."
(Reporter off-camera: "Does the UK have necessary to sufficiently protect the shipping in the Straits of Hormuz. You've said today in the Telegraph that the Navy has been run down over recent years, Do you think it has the resources now? Also how are you going to pay for the increased 2.5 % GDP that you proposed in the paper today?")
"This is a situation in which all of us are grateful that we have the superb resources of the Royal Navy at our disposal. I made the point today that looking forward - the world feels a very different place to when the Berlin Wall came down. We have reduced the size of the Navy since that period, I think we now need to look ahead to the next 20, 30 years and ask ourselves whether that remains the right posture. But for now, we can be grateful that we have what I believe is the best navy in the world out there defending British shipping."

STORYLINE:
Britain's foreign secretary on Friday called for calm amid rising tensions over shipping in the Persian Gulf, saying the UK does not want a conflict with Iran.
Jeremy Hunt said "this is a time for cool heads" to make sure there is no "unintended escalation".
Tensions have risen after Gibraltar, a British overseas territory, seized an Iranian oil tanker last week.
The vessel was allegedly carrying Tehran's oil to Syria in breach of EU sanctions.
Earlier this week, the UK Royal Navy said it stopped Iranian paramilitary vessels from disrupting the passage of a British oil tanker through a critical shipping lane near the Persian Gulf.
Hunt said Friday that London has given "a measured and careful" response to the situation.
"We are being clear to Iran that we are not seeking to escalate this situation", he added.
British media reported Friday that the HMS Duncan, a Type 45 Destroyer, will sail to the gulf after taking part in NATO exercises in the Black Sea.
It is said to arrive in a few days.
The Duncan had already been scheduled to go to the region, but the deployment is being moved forward a few days amid the deepening crisis with Iran.
Duncan will operate alongside the Royal Navy frigate HMS Montrose and American forces.
