"President Vucic and I had an opportunity to discuss the current political situation, not only here in Serbia, but in the entire region. That is really important, especially after the European Union's failure to find a compromise regarding the opening of membership talks with North Macedonia and with Albania. In our opinion, that was a historic mistake and that is a bad message to the entire region."

STORYLINE:
A US envoy for the Western Balkans has described European Union's decision not to open membership talks with North Macedonia and Albania as a "historic mistake" that sends a bad message to the region.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer on Monday said the US will do "everything we can" to persuade the EU to reverse the decision before a planned leaders' meeting in Croatia in May.
Palmer said "America wants the Western Balkans to have a European perspective."
Palmer spoke in Belgrade, the Serbian capital, after meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
The US has intensified efforts to help relaunch stalled talks on normalising relations between Serbia and Kosovo, a former province whose 2008 declaration of independence Belgrade does not recognise.
Vucic said normalisation talks could resume in two to three months.
