"So, farming already has sports, right. There's tractor pulling, there's speed ploughing, there's all these things. So, farming in itself has sports already. We are a game, for games it's kind of obvious that people love to play competitive against each other. We had people playing against each other in different things like who makes the most money, everything, and they asked us one point to create something competitive. So, we took the two things off people loving competitive playing and farming already having sports and started thinking about how can we create an eSports out of it? And we ended up with this."

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Carlo Borg, Farming Simulator League competitor:
"The Farming Simulator League is pretty new and the special thing about it was you usually know just the base game, that means you manage your farm just like that. But with the Farming Simulator League, it is all about the competition. Two teams battle each other - three versus three - who presses the most bales, but there are other factors. How much did I really harvest? How many litres of wheat did I really deliver? Did I manage to destroy the other team's score? That's what's special because there are different strategies how you can go about this and that's what we already know in the first tournament at FarmCon. You can rush that, you can steal all the machines of the other team which wins you the match. It's really open, and you just don't know what will happen."

"Well I think it is indeed a bit funny, because some decades ago Farming Simulator was known as something that was a little weird to play, but it is one of the best-selling games, for example, in Germany. And now, having that Farming Simulator League really means something. And let's see how it will develop from here, it's the second tournament here at Gamescom."

So, we are in the process of proving that this can be an eSport, that it can be fun, and it can be a game everyone is enjoying to play and to watch and that's what we try right now."

LEADIN:
Wheat harvesting and straw bale pressing might not sound like activities ripe for competitive gaming, but a dedicated group of gamers is trying to turn farming into an eSport.
The Farming Simulator League is set to stage its second tournament at Cologne's Gamescom trade show.
STORYLINE:
Forget shooting and killing your opponent, in Farming Simulator, it's all about tractor driving, wheat harvesting and straw bale pressing.
And - "Fortnite" and "Overwatch" beware - gamers are now turning "Farming Simulator", made by Switzerland-based GIANTS Software, into an eSport.
It's based on the enduringly popular Farming Simulator series, which debuted in 2008.
Competitive events had existed for years, mainly being held at small agriculture events, but then Lars Malcharek and his colleagues at GIANTS Software were challenged to bring farming eSports to the masses.
"We had people playing against each other in different things like who makes the most money, everything, and they asked us one point to create something competitive," he says.
"So, we took the two things off people loving competitive playing and farming already having sports and started thinking about how can we create an eSports out of it?"
The league debuted last month at a two-day event in Harsewinkel, northern Germany, called Farmcon 19.
It was hosted by CLAAS, a farm equipment supplier.
22-year-old Carlo Borg is one of several competitive Farming Simulator players.
He even has a YouTube channel where he regularly posts gameplay.
It's had almost 80 million views.
"With the Farming Simulator League, it is all about the competition," he says.
"Two teams battle each other - three versus three - who presses the most bales, but there are other factors. How much did I really harvest? How many litres of wheat did I really deliver? Did I manage to destroy the other team's score?"
The first tournament was won by team "Trelleborg", who took home a 2,000 euro prize - a far cry from the 3 million US dollars recently won by a Fortnite gamer at a tournament in New York.
"Well I think it is indeed a bit funny, because some decades ago Farming Simulator was known as something that was a little weird to play," says Borg.
"But it is one of the best-selling games, for example, in Germany. And now, having that Farming Simulator League really means something."
Farming Simulator League is now set to stage its second tournament at Cologne's Gamescom trade show.
At the end of the season, the best teams from across Europe will compete for the title of Farming Simulator Champion and 100,000 euros in prizes.
"We want to have a non-violent game, because we believe that eSports can be for everyone," says Malcharek.
"It's for, you know, for families, for young people, for old people, why not. You just need a game to prove it. And this is the game we do it with."
The game is doing one thing right - attracting big names, in the farming world at least.
US tractor maker John Deere and several other equipment manufacturers have entered teams into the league.
"For now, we try to spread the word that there is farming eSports because if I tell someone what I'm doing, what my job is, they don't believe me. They're like; 'Yeah, farming eSports, of course you you're doing Farming Simulator eSports,'" says Malcharek.
"So, we are in the process of proving that this can be an eSport, that it can be fun, and it can be a game everyone is enjoying to play and to watch and that's what we try right now."
Over 350,000 visitors are crowding Cologne's expo centre for the annual Gamescom trade show.
The event is featuring around 1,100 exhibitors, including industry giants Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation and Nintendo.
Gamescom, Europe's biggest video games event, runs till 24 August.
