"The police and the community, historically, several communities, there has been tension over the years. The police departments, they have attempted to turn the corner on some of these problems through training, through better interaction and building community-police relationships. It's going to take a while before there's new trust that's built. No great bridge is built overnight. We have to build it stone by stone, brick by brick, until we both can reach each other's side and understanding. Our police play a vital role in ensuring that we are safe. A small number of officers have abused their power throughout the years and now we're making sure that those officers are removed from the department."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President:
"But at the same time, there is an obligation that the public has. You cannot spit in the face of an officer, you cannot mock up or destroy the property of a police vehicle. The respect goes on both sides. And as a former police officer and a retired captain, I know how important it is that we should and we must have trust in our police department, and it is a symbiotic relationship between the police and the public. We all prosper when we have public safety. That's the prerequisite to prosperity, and that is to be safe. What we saw in the demonstration two weeks ago is not acceptable. It is something that we don't want to see in the city of New York. We believe there were many out-of-towners who came here and were provocateurs towards the demonstration that we witnessed and we don't want that type of demonstration in the city. You could peacefully voice your concern, our country believes that. But we don't want to see that type of interaction with the symbol of public safety, and that's our police department."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President:
"It is hard to distinguish between the two. Often times, you will see individuals who are marching peacefully, they become corrupted by a small number who will infiltrate the crowd, and they will bring a level of anxiety. We've seen this throughout history, from the days of Dr. King's marches where you have a few people who would come into the crowd and provoke the crowd, so we know that. And it is hard to decide which group is which. So you just have to continue to hope that the police can continue to carry out a very professional approach to quelling the demonstration and allowing people to have the right to voice their concerns. And that's what we saw. We saw a great level of discipline, and restraint on the part of the police - that they did not allow those who wanted to provoke them, they did not allow themselves to be roped into that, they carried out their duties in a very professional way. And that is what we expect."

Respect should go both sides between the police and the public, said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, as he called for peaceful protests, citing safety as the precondition of prosperity.
On the night of Nov. 1, around 1,000 anti-police protesters descended on downtown Brooklyn, swamping subway stations, vandalizing police vehicles and shouting obscene insults at police officers.
Adams admits that some police officers have been abusing their power but he remains hopeful that renewed trust will be built between the police and the public for the sake of guaranteed public safety.
"The police and the community, historically, several communities, there has been tension over the years. The police departments, they have attempted to turn the corner on some of these problems through training, through better interaction and building community-police relationships. It's going to take a while before there's new trust that's built. No great bridge is built overnight. A small number of officers have abused their power throughout the years and now we're making sure that those officers are removed from the department," he said.
While pledging to remove those police officers who abuse their power, the borough president also called upon the public to fulfill their "obligation" to protest and voice their concerns peacefully, calling for respect on both sides. Protests like the one two weeks ago in Brooklyn are not acceptable, and safety is the prerequisite of prosperity, he said.
You could peacefully voice your concern, our country believes that. But we don't want to see that type of interaction with the symbol of public safety, and that's our police department," Adams noted.
He pointed out that it is often very hard to distinguish peaceful protesters from ill-intentioned provocateurs. Therefore, the public must trust the police to solve the problem with their professionalism and guarantee people's rights to voice their concerns.
