2. SOUNDBITE (English), Emilio Estevez, actor/writer/director, on concept of "The Public":
"This began 12 years ago, in fact today: 2007, April 1st. It was a newspaper article. The L.A. Times. showed up at my door. I opened it up and read this extraordinary essay written by a Salt Lake City librarian who was retiring, but before he went out he said, "Look, people need to know what's happening." And what's happening in libraries is that they're becoming de facto homeless shelters and librarians are becoming first responders. And this is not just localized to Salt Lake City, his library, but this was an epidemic across the country."

4. SOUNDBITE (English), Alec Baldwin, actor, on what attracted so many notable actors to this film:
"What I loved about the script was that somebody, whether it was him or someone else could have made this as a documentary. They could have done a documentary about this crisis in the library system in this country. But instead, they made a movie about it where there was some really nice roles for people to play and there's humor in there—it's not all just this screed about homelessness. Underneath the story or overlap in the story is this theme. But at the same time, there's wonderful parts. I mean, he's an actor (Emilio Estevez). When he writes these scripts he writes—I mean, look at the cast he has. You attract people like this because you give them a real part they can play. And I think it's a really, the topic is important. But the good news is that it's also a good movie and there's really wonderful parts that people can play and he got a wonderful cast to come and play them."

6. SOUNDBITE (English), Michael K. Williams, actor, on what he learned from this role:
"I was one of those people that had forgotten about the library. You know, I got my computer at home. So I had forgotten about the library and the need for the library. But most importantly, I forgot about the people that used the library, for whatever reasons. And I got reminded of that one day going to work. Our hours were 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. because we had to work around the library's hours. And one day, I got to work around 5:30 p.m., 6-ish as the library was closing and I was like, this is the middle of the production, I should know everybody. Emilio, we—I showed the entire cast and it was all, "Who's all these new faces?" And then I realized these weren't actors—these were actually the people that I was portraying. They were leaving the library because they had been there all day and the people who don't have homes, they were there. And I just stood—I stood by the door and just watched and I looked at him and I was like, this is...it just humbled me on a level that I never felt before."

8. SOUNDBITE (English), Emilio Estevez, actor/writer/director, on reaction from the homeless community:
"The individuals experiencing homelessness watch the film and said, "That's me." And so the individuals who are depicted in the film are seeing themselves on screen and they're empowered because this movie celebrates the outcasts and the misfits and the marginalized and the poor. And they are seeing themselves playing heroic roles on screen and to be in those rooms and watching it with these with these individuals has been an extraordinary experience for me."

10. SOUNDBITE (English), Alec Baldwin, actor, on the Digital Divide:
"Someone said that to me once, they said—I said, What's the thing you think is the most important thing about a library?" And they said, "It's the best way to travel when you have no money." There's people—it's just have no relief they have from this world and how they live and inside a library are millions of other worlds that you can access. And for many, many people they don't have cable, they don't have Netflix, they don't have streaming services and so forth. So a library remains a place for them to have all the things that everybody else has."

12. SOUNDBITE (English), Taylor Schilling, actress, on the importance of libraries:
"There are so few places that are actual concrete structures that people can go without having to engage in commerce. I mean, it's a safe place to land. It's a physical structure that exists that is open to all. It's truly democratic."

14. SOUNDBITE (English), Alec Baldwin, actor, if "The Public" has a purposeful political message:
"A modest investment in libraries across this country would reap us so many benefits—so many benefits. I mean, yeah, there are kids who are not that interested in reading and education and learning and, you know, their parents are bribing their way into some schools where we read all about that stuff. That aside, I still believe that most people in the country—most kids in this country and most people—they want to learn, they want to read. They want to expand their mind in some way and they want to not be sitting there with a device in their hand playing solitaire, you know. And these institutions remain the most important places for that to happen."

STORYLINE:
'THE PUBLIC' REMINDS AMERICA ABOUT ONE OF ITS MOST IMPORTANT INSTITUTIONS: THE LIBRARY
When Emilio Estevez opened his door and picked up his L.A. Times newspaper 12 years ago, he read an article that would change his life—so much so, he made a movie about it.
"I opened it up and read this extraordinary essay written by a Salt Lake City librarian who was retiring, but before he went out he said, 'Look, people need to know what's happening,' said Estevez. "And what's happening in libraries is that they're becoming de facto homeless shelters and librarians are becoming first responders. And this is not just localized to Salt Lake City, his library, but this was an epidemic across the country."
Estevez stars in, wrote and directed "The Public," a film that boasts a star-studded cast which includes Alec Baldwin, Michael K. Williams, Taylor Schilling and Gabrielle Union, along with Christian Slater and Jeffrey Wright.
The film centers on a librarian who joins forces with homeless patrons when they stage a protest and turn the building into an "impromptu homeless shelter for one night during the most brutal cold snap in recent Cincinnati history." So why would so many notable actors want to join this production?
"What I loved about the script was that somebody, whether it was him (Estevez) or someone else could have made this as a documentary. They could have done a documentary about this crisis in the library system in this country. But instead, they made a movie about it where there was some really nice roles for people to play and there's humor in there—it's not all just this screed about homelessness," said Baldwin. "The good news is that it's also a good movie and there's really wonderful parts that people can play, and he got a wonderful cast to come and play them."
Michael K. Williams, who plays Jackson, the homeless man that leads the protest, said this role was an eye opener for him.
"I was one of those people that had forgotten about the library. You know, I got my computer at home. So I had forgotten about the library and the need for the library. But most importantly, I forgot about the people that used the library," said Williams.
He recalled a particular night when he arrived early on set and saw new faces. At first, he thought they might be part of the cast and crew, but he soon realized who they were.
"They were leaving the library because they had been there all day and the people who don't have homes, they were there. And I just stood—I stood by the door and just watched." He added that "it just humbled me on a level that I never felt before."
The cast said they hope this is a reminder, not only about the persistent homeless epidemic America battles, but also the digital divide.
"There are so few places that are actual concrete structures that people can go without having to engage in commerce," said Schilling. "I mean, it's a safe place to land. It's a physical structure that exists that is open to all. It's truly democratic."
Baldwin added, "A modest investment in libraries across this country would reap us so many benefits—so many benefits. I mean, yeah, there are kids who are not that interested in reading and education and learning and, you know, their parents are bribing their way into some schools where we read all about that stuff. That aside, I still believe that most people in the country—most kids in this country and most people—they want to learn, they want to read. They want to expand their mind."
"The Public" opens in U.S. theaters on Friday (5 April).
