"What's amazing about Riley's work is that for all the different types of abstraction that you might see, from stripes, to diagonals, to curves, different compositions, she's actually, underlying all that, inspired by nature. She is really interested in how light plays through landscape, how light falls through leaves or on somebody's face. And understanding those sort of foundational principles allows her to create such dramatic work."

44. SOUNDBITE (English) Cliff Lauson, Curator:
"I really hope that all visitors coming into the gallery have a chance to really understand what it means to look and to see, and I think the great part about Riley's work is that she puts an artwork out there and then whoever comes in front of that picture brings with it whatever they bring with it, whoever they are, however they see. And they can learn something about their own way of seeing the world and their own perception."

LEADIN:
London's Hayward Gallery is presenting the largest-ever exhibit devoted to British artist Bridget Riley.
Riley is famed for her mind-bending artworks - filled with shapes and colours - they're inspired by her perceptions of nature.
STORYLINE:
An explosion of shapes, colours and diagonals. London's Hayward Gallery is presenting a major new exhibit devoted to British artist Bridget Riley.
It's the largest exhibit of her work to date, spanning 70 years. It includes over 200 works and 50 key paintings by the now 88-year-old.
In 1960, Riley evolved a style that produces a disorientating physical effect on the eye. It became known as "op art", using geometric forms to create optical effects.
The abstract paintings explore the fundamental nature of perception.
"She's best known for her works that have perceptual effects to them, they really challenge your eyes and the way you see," says curator Cliff Lauson.
"They're always abstract, sometimes using black and white, sometimes using colour, but they do provide you with some pretty amazing perceptual experiences."
"Riley is an artist who has been absolutely inspired by the long art history, by the famous painters in the history of art canon, and she's worked over the course of her working life to understand, like those artists have understood before her, the use of colour, the use of comparisons of colour, things like tone, shade, light, and how to bring those together in her own signature abstract way."
Riley was born in London in 1931.
The exhibit features early studies from the 1950s, black and white works from the 1960s and colourful dotted pieces from the last few years.
Elsewhere, the gallery's large architecture has been filled with several of the artist's sprawling wall works. Many large canvasses on display have rarely been seen in the UK.
Riley is attending the preview of the new exhibit and explained her abstract approach.
"I think I look with my sight, so to speak, and you, understandably when you come here, are looking at these paintings," she says.
"It doesn't have to serve a purpose, like actually a great deal of other paintings. It doesn't have to represent something. Colours, lines, shapes, spaces, do not have to stand in for double duty, so to speak."
Lauson says Riley's works are influenced by her observations of the natural world.
"She is really interested in how light plays through landscape, how light falls through leaves or on somebody's face," he says.
"And understanding those sort of foundational principles allows her to create such dramatic work."
It's the third solo exhibit Riley has presented at the gallery, following shows in 1971 and 1992.
"I really hope that all visitors coming into the gallery have a chance to really understand what it means to look and to see," says Lauson.
"And I think the great part about Riley's work is that she puts an artwork out there and then whoever comes in front of that picture brings with it whatever they bring with it, whoever they are, however they see.
"And they can learn something about their own way of seeing the world and their own perception."
"Bridget Riley" opened Wednesday (23 October) and runs till 26 January 2020. The exhibit was previously staged at the Scottish National Gallery.
