RESTRICTION SUMMARY:  MUST CREDIT UNIVISION
SHOTLIST:
UNIVISION - MANDATORY CREDIT UNIVISION
Milwaukee, Wisconsin - 11 July 2019
1. Various of US presidential hopeful Julian Castro walking onto stage:
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Julian Castro, (D) presidential hopeful:
(++responds to question from immigrant veterans group about veterans who face deportation++)
"In the immigration plan, my people-first immigration plan that I released on April 2nd, one of the things I call for is to immediately ensure that veterans who have been deported can come back into the United States and pursue citizenship here in the United States because they served our country honorably. They did their duty for our country and we owe them a debt of gratitude. And the last thing that we should do is see them deported away from their family and unable to enjoy the fruits of their labour in defending this country."
3. Senator and US presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren walking onto stage
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Elizabeth Warren, (D) presidential hopeful:
(++responds to question about US President Donald Trump's decision no to pursue a question about citizenship on the census++)
Warren: "Wow he's going to follow the law?" (++laughter++)
(Host: "He said he's going to seek other ways to get this information, right?")
Warren: "This is not about trying to find out real information about citizenship and non-citizenship in America. This is just about trying to stir up some more hate. To try to get more people excited. Donald Trump has one big message to the American people. If there's something wrong in your life, if there's something that's not working, blame them. Blame people who don't look like you, blame people who don't sound like you, blame people who don't pray like you blame people who weren't born where you were born. Well he isn't. He wants to build an America that pits working people against hard working people. That is not how we build a future in this country. We build a future together that's how we make a stronger America."
5. Senator and US presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders walks onto stage
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Bernie Sanders, (I) presidential hopeful:
"We will end the hatred. We will end the xenophobia that currently exists in this country. We will provide immediate legal status to the 1.8 million young people eligible for the DACA program. We will move to comprehensive immigration reform and a path toward citizenship for all 11 million documented." (++applause++)
7. U.S. Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke walks onto stage
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Beto O'Rourke, (D) presidential hopeful:
"I want to make sure that we elevate the priority of this hemisphere in our foreign policy. It should not have come as a surprise to us. That tens of thousands of children were willing to make an upwards of two thousand mile journey, seeking refuge and shelter and safety in this country. I want to make sure that we work with the communities in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala and work with those nations and other stakeholders and governments in the region to make sure that we address these issues before they become problems there or for us at the US Mexico border."
9. O'Rourke waves to crowd, leaves stage
STORYLINE:
Democratic presidential hopefuls on Thursday promised major changes to US immigration law, contrasting their ideas to the hardline policies of US President Donald Trump during a forum with Latino political activists in Milwaukee.
The White House hopefuls gathered as Trump's detention policies have sparked fierce Democratic pushback and intense public debate.
They uniformly panned Trump's approach to immigration on a day when the president abandoned his contentious effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren drew one of the biggest audience reactions of the night when asked about the issue.
"Wow, he's going to follow the law?" Warren said to laughter and applause.
"This is not about trying to find real information about citizenship and non-citizenship in America. This is just about trying to stir up some more hate", she said.
Julian Castro said he would let deported veterans back into the country.
Senator Bernie Sanders said he would grant legal status to the 1.8 million people brought to the US illegally as children.
