Because (before) we believed in a process of renovation, of a transformation for Brazil legally, but the coup was a heavy blow that interrupted all our dreams."

He believes that society united and realising the danger the country was facing, got together civilians and militaries, and (in doing so) we were able to recover and re-locate our country in a direction that – had it not happened - today we would have here a government that would not be good for anyone. Our president decided and told the Ministry of Defence to organise the commemorations."

"This (President Jair Bolsonaro asking the military to commemorate the coup) means that he thinks dictatorship against opponents, against political dissidents, is not dictatorship. That the illegitimate use of force is not violence when imposed on those who have different beliefs, that torture is not torture but a fair and justified treatment. So it shows a deep ignorance and lack of acknowledgment of a doctrine that is internationally accepted. Nobody can be considered as someone with democratic convictions and positions, even light democratic positions, if they do not have a minimum understanding about those things."

STORYLINE:
Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro asked Brazil's defence ministry to organise "due commemorations" of the 31 March 1964 coup that marked the beginning of a two-decade long authoritarian rule, triggering a wave of discontent in the country.
Brazil's federal prosecutors' office said Tuesday that the official commemoration of the country's 1964 military coup, ordered by President Jair Bolsonaro, "deserved social and political repudiation", as well as being a possible "act of administrative misconduct".
Aside from the prosecutors' office stringent condemnation, several civil society groups are organising events throughout the country in protest.
A Brazilian lawyer separately filed a class action, arguing it was not in the public's interest, Brazilian publication Estadao reported Tuesday.
Bolsonaro's decision put an end to a 2011 decree from then-President Dilma Rousseff, who had asked armed forces to suspend such commemorations.
Rousseff, a former guerrilla fighter, was jailed and tortured during the dictatorship.
When voting in favour or her impeachment in 2016, Bolsonaro dedicated his vote to the former colonel who tortured her.
"This means that he thinks the dictatorship against opponents, against political dissidents, is not a dictatorship", said Rosa Cardoso, a lawyer who coordinated Brazil's national truth commission.
"That the illegitimate use of force is not violence when imposed on those who have different beliefs, that torture is not torture but a fair and justified treatment," Cardoso said.
In 2014, after two years of investigation, the national truth commission concluded that at least 434 people were killed or disappeared during the dictatorship.
Among indigenous communities, the death toll rises sharply.
According to the report, the vast majority of the more than 8,000 tribe members that were potentially killed at the hands of authoritarian regimes between 1946 and 1988, were murdered during the dictatorship.
It is estimated that between 30,000 and 50,000 people were illegally arrested and tortured, the prosecutors' office said.
Bolsonaro, a former army captain, has repeatedly praised Brazil's 1964-1985 military regime, shocking many Brazilians, seducing others.
He believes for instance that the dictatorship should have gone further in killing communists who threatened the nation.
Once elected, Bolsonaro surrounded himself with former generals, appointing several of them in his government.
His decision was confirmed Monday by government spokesman Otavio Rego Barros in a brief statement during a press conference.
The "president does not believe March 31 1964 was a coup", Barros told reporters.
"I feel as if the torture has returned, and can return", Alvaro Caldas, a former guerrilla fighter who was jailed, kidnapped and tortured during the military rule, said from his Rio de Janeiro apartment in Copacabana.
Caldas, now a 78 year-old retired journalist, has an old photo of himself showing two puffy, black eyes.
The photo, he says, was taken in 1983, when the military allegedly kidnapped him and interrogated him for a week before releasing him.
Another political militant and victim of torture, Crimeia Alice Schmidt de Almeida, deplored the lack of convictions among the army's ranks.
She was sent to a torture centre in Sao Paulo in 1972 when she was eight-months pregnant.
An amnesty law has prevented most prosecutions linked to abuses under the dictatorship from leading to convictions.
Brazil's federal prosecutors' office said Tuesday that under international criminal law, Brazilian dictators "had committed crimes against humanity".
The long statement concluded that the initiative sounded like an "apology for the practice of atrocities and therefore deserves social and political repudiation".
