"There is a lot of progress we can continue to make and I hope that young women, will take a look you know, and and not be afraid. I mean you know I'm an ordinary woman and I just happen to like solving problems, but you know start with puzzles and then do the math and then learn equations, and then quadratic equations and calculus, and just learn to do it and you'd be surprised at where you can go and how much fun. I look back on my career and I think I never had a dull day at work."

LEADIN:
The achievement of the moon landing in 1969 was 'one giant leap for mankind'.
NASA landed 12 men on the moon over six Apollo missions, but 50 years ago in the Apollo 11 firing room, a sole female worker hunkered down with her male colleagues for the launch.
STORYLINE:
Amid the sea of men inside NASA's firing room for the liftoff of Apollo 11, sat JoAnn Morgan.
She wanted to blend on July 16, 1969, in her prime-time debut as the first female launch controller.
It wasn't easy getting there.
"During the Apollo 11 mission, my role was at launch control. The launch control center in Florida is where the Saturn 5 and the Apollo 11 was launched from. And I'd already been working there for almost 10 years so for me getting to work in the firing room was pretty exciting" she recalls.
"The firing room is where the managers and the test conductors and engineers and technicians are gathered. They're close to 500 people. They're in one room together and they are literally locked in there in that room and focused on completing the mission" she adds.
Morgan, 78, who began working for NASA in 1958 while in college, typically got the overnight shift before launches. She'd be replaced by a male colleague a few hours before show time.
Occasionally she'd get obscene phone calls at her desk and lewd remarks in the elevator. Unable to seek help at work, she leaned on her husband for support.
"And some of the things that happened to me like obscene phone calls I would never repeat to anybody except him, I could tell him exactly what was said but I couldn't tell anyone couldn't tell my mom and dad. I couldn't tell my supervisor. I couldn't tell my co-workers. I just could not do it. And these are are things that each individual has to handle based on their own personal strength."
As Apollo 11 loomed, Morgan's boss went to the top to get her on lift-off duty. By then, the harassment had pretty much stopped.
With Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on their way, her job was done, at least for Apollo 11.
Morgan and her husband Larry, a high school band director, slipped away on vacation and watched the July 20 moon landing on a hotel TV.
Morgan went on to become Kennedy's first female senior executive. Retired since 2003, she splits her time between Florida and Montana, and encourages young women to study engineering.
Despite the struggles she recalls her time at NASA fondly. "I look back on my career and I think I never had a dull day at work."
Morgan hopes for more gender equality in future missions. "I hope we don't see pictures anymore with the lone woman in a sea of men. I hope we see pictures with, you know we don't have to have a lone man in a sea a women either. I'd like to see pictures in these technical environments like a mission control, a launch control are even our Congress where there are a lot of each genders who are working hard."
