"I always act strong. I am not used to showing my vulnerability or depending on others so when my voice didn't come out (because of functional vocal disorder), I couldn't tell anyone. When I eventually asked for help, lots of people helped me including my band and staff members. That's why I was able to come back (to perform). I definitely think sometimes being strong means being able to tell others about your vulnerability and anxiety. I've included these feelings in my (latest) song."

13. SOUNDBITE (Japanese), Ryuta Yamamura, Recording Artist on the name of the tour:
"I imagined people who had given something up and weren't going anywhere and then decided that they'd like to try again. To use a relationship as an example; a couple reuniting again after a year of being apart may find their love and devotion had increased compared to before. For myself, I'd given up on music but wanted to try it again, so I named the tour title to show that the past year of not making music has been meaningful, and that we're stronger than before."

17. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Ryuta Yamamura, Recording Artist on suffering during his performance:
"The last live (at the time of his diagnosis) was very painful. The live at Yokohama Pacifico (National Convention Hall). When my voice didn't come out… When I sing, I normally face the crowd. But for the first time, I was in so much pain that I couldn't face them straight and had to look at my hand while singing. But I can sing again (now) because I've overcome such experience."

STORYLINE:
JAPANESE ROCK BAND FLUMPOOL PERFORMS IN HONG KONG
Japanese rock band performed in Hong Kong for their first-ever solo live event this Saturday (SEPTEMBER 14 2019) at KITEC, a convention and exhibition center.
Flumpool, a band of four from Osaka, entertained a packed venue full of fans gathered amid ongoing political unrest at the semi-autonomous city over now-shelved extradition bill.
They showcased their latest song "Help" and other hits like "Hoshi Ni Negai Wo" and "Kimi Ni Todoke" in front of roaring fans unilaterally chanting and waving their fists on air.  The band even prepared some songs in Cantonese. They said it was very "difficult" to learn how to sing in Cantonese but nevertheless pulled through.
Formed in 2007, the quartet quickly rose to fame in Japan after releasing their debut single "Hana ni nare," landing themselves in the competitive Japanese ORICON chart. However, the band hit an unexpected hiatus after Ryuta Yamamura, the lead singer, was diagnosed with functional vocal disorder in 2017. The acclaimed vocalist said it was the most "agonizing" time of his life.
Yamamura said it was difficult for him to get help at first because he's not used to showing his vulnerability. "I couldn't tell anyone (about the condition)," he told Associated Press, adding that he even gave up on music. However, it was his loved ones - band and staff members, and his voice coach - who helped him to overcome the voice disorder He specifically credited his voice coach who made a full recovery after suffering from the same condition for seven years. "I definitely think being strong means being able to tell others about your vulnerability and anxiety sometimes," he said, adding that these feelings inspired the title of his latest album "HELP."
After Yamamura's recovery, the band made a comeback in their hometown Osaka in January 2019 and has been devoting themselves to their 9th tour. The tour name, "Command Shift Z," was inspired by shortcut keys on music software. It also represents the band's determination to start fresh. "For myself, I've given up on music but I wanted to try again. So I named the tour to show that past year of no music has been meaningful, and that we're stronger than before," said Yamamura.
Flumpool will perform at Kanamoto Hall in Sapporo on 20 September 2019.
