STORYLINE:
Venezuelan opposition supporters gathered in Caracas' Plaza Bolivar on Thursday after claiming they had been prevented from holding a planned demonstration.
Opposition lawmaker Juan Pablo Guanipa told supporters the crowd were stopped from going through with their celebratory plans to mark the anniversary of Venezuela's 1958 overthrow of dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez and the return of democracy.
Guanipa said January 23 was a date which embodied the spirit of freedom which the country had "lost".
Meanwhile, government supporters held their own anniversary march in Caracas and gathered to hear President Nicolas Maduro speak.
In reference to opposition leader Juan Guaido's self-proclamation to take over as the interim president last, Maduro said Venezuela or the world had never seen any bigger "nonsense".
