A robotic cat, a device which tells you when you need the toilet and biodegradable phone cases are some of offerings at this years Showstoppers event at IFA.
The annual tech show comes at a difficult time for the industry, with trade wars and Brexit worrying a lot of technology companies.
STORYLINE
This is not a cat... but rather a robot that reacts to your strokes by waging its robotic tail.
The 200 dollar cat robot - which can also be used as a pillow - is on show at the Showstoppers event at the IFA technology show in Berlin.
Showstoppers allows startups and small tech companies to showcase their products to the journalists and traders who visit this enormous event.
That includes Yukai Engineering, the makers of the cat robot.
Qoobo - as the robot cat is called - reacts differently to differents stokes and pats.
More energetic stroking means more energetic tail movements. The idea is to enable people who can't have pets to at least be able to experience what it's like.
"We are based in Tokyo, and people live in tiny apartments. No access to animals. So we designed this robot for substitution," says Shunsuke Aoki, Yukai Engineering founder.
Another Japanese company is showing a wooden board at the show.
The board - from Mui - acts as a controller for a smart home. You can press on the wood to turn lights on and off, turn the heating up or down or turn on music.
It's another step in the move towards smart homes and the internet of things.
"The Internet of things is here and it has been here for quite some time," says Nicole Scott, editor of the Mobilegeeks technology website.
"If we look in to our homes, a lot of our stuff has the Internet. But where the evolution is going, what we are going to be seeing in the next five years, is artificial intelligence making those experiences a lot more useful. For us and how we live our lives."
Japanese company Tripple W is showing a connected device they hope will help thousands of elderly people and people with health complications.
The D Free device is a small ultrasound sensor that's attached to the lower belly.
It measures how full the bladder is and sends the information to a smartphone.
The smartphone can then inform the user about the next optimal time to go to the bathroom, avoiding accidents and problems.
It has not been designed for young healthy people, but rather for people with incontinence problems or people that are not very mobile and therefore need more time to get to a bathroom.
"Some people can not move fast. So they want to know of it before hand so they can reach out on time, at the toilet. That is one of they usage of this device," says Yuhei Urabe, the founder of Tripple W.
Swedish company Wilma here showing it's phone cases which are made with 100 percent biodegradable materials. It an effort to stop our oceans being polluted with plastics.
"We in our industry has a lot of learning to do. And we have to step up to the plate and really do something for our planet. And that is our small little first step contribution to do that is to start making our mobile cases eco friendly," says Pärlan Fritz, Head of development for Wilma.
A cloud hangs over this year's IFA event, it's the ongoing trade conflict between the US and China and Brexit which is causing concern for people in the tech sector.
CCS Insight Analyst Ben Wood is more confident, believing the sector will continue to innovate, despite the global political problems.
"We certainly live in uncertain times. You only have to look at the geo political situation right now with trade wars, with Brexit and much more," he says.
"But the technology industry never stops. We push forward, always. New technologies, new exciting areas, big bets like foldables. Who knows if it is a problem that we really need to solve. But I'm confident that if we look five years in to the future there will be plenty to see at shows like IFA."
The annual IFA consumer electronics show regularly draws over 240,000 visitors.
This year, over 1,800 companies are exhibiting on the show floor.
The show is open to the public on today (Friday 6th) and will continue until September 11th.
