The US Justice Department says it's charged more than 260 individuals over the past year in connection with fraud scams that victimize people age 60 and older.
US Attorney General William Barr and other law enforcement officials announced on Thursday what they say is the department's largest-ever nationwide crackdown on elder fraud schemes.
"It's despicable because the people that are involved are vulnerable and because of their stage they don't have the opportunity frequently to recover and so these loses are devastating to them. We have to prosecute and all out attack on this kind of crime," Barr said.
In addition to the criminal charges, the department also is bringing civil cases against dozens of other defendants.
