1. Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner Greg Hood (right) and New South Wales Police Superintendent Paul Condon (left) speaking with another official
2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Greg Hood, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner:
"I would like firstly to echo the condolences expressed by the prime minister (Scott Morrison), the deputy prime minister (Michael McCormack), who I briefed last night and numerous others in the tragic loss of life of these three Americans in the C-130 water tanker near Peak Ridge, just near here, across the back here, yesterday (Thursday) around about 13:30 (0230 GMT), in the selfless pursuit of the prevention of loss of life and property."

3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Greg Hood, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner:
"Our early understanding at this stage is the aircraft arrived at 13:15 (0215 GMT) on-site and proceeded to drop a line of fire retardant across the ridge. Not long after the aircraft had discharged the retardant, the aircraft impacted terrain, killing the three onboard the aircraft."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Greg Hood, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner:
"It's a particularly complicated site at the moment, it is an active bushfire area and those people (investigators) have been escorted into the area and out of the area by the police and by the RFS (Rural Fire Service). So, the kinds of backgrounds of investigators that we've chosen to bring to this particular site, aeronautical engineers, aircraft maintenance engineers and pilots and electronic data recovery specialists."

5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Greg Hood, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner:
"There is a process in place of the police securing the site. So, at the moment, the New South Wales Police Force and the Disaster Victims Identification team are working in the aircraft wreckage to remove those that are deceased in this accident and then there will be a formal process for Superintendent Condon to hand over the site to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. Once the site has been handed over to us, excepting the fact that the New South Wales police force have done an outstanding job already at examining the hazards associated, we have some specific knowledge of this airframe and will be looking to secure any hazards in relation to aviation fuel, the magnesium wheels and any of the unexploded pressurized canisters, such as oxygen bottles and generally making sure that the site is safe to work on. That might take as much as another day tomorrow (Saturday) to work carefully through the site."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Greg Hood, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner:
"We will then be looking at activities, including mapping each piece of evidence. We sent two investigators up in a helicopter earlier to map the site from the air and to map the site on the approach path that was taken by the C-130 yesterday. We will be using the drone to do the 3D mapping of the accident site and then we will be moving back to talk to the witnesses. We understand that there were several witnesses to the accident and we will be interested in their particular statements in relation to what they saw."
++BLACK FRAMES++
7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Greg Hood, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner:
"We understand the aircraft is equipped with a cockpit voice recorder, most cockpit voice recorders record the last two hours of what happened on the flight deck so we are most interested and we'll be looking for that piece of equipment very early in the investigations, such that we can return it to Canberra to our technical facility to see what exchanges may have been in the cockpit during those final moments."
++BLACK FRAMES++
8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Superintendent Paul Condon, New South Wales Police:
"It is obviously that the plane has impacted heavily and the crash site covers a good kilometre just in length. There is a lot of work to do to gather all the evidence for the ATSB are working with us to do."
++BLACK FRAMES++
9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Greg Hood, Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) Chief Commissioner:
"For the first time in many years, we have a number of, I think there's upwards of 500 firefighting aircraft active across the country, from about 150 different companies and obviously from several different countries. So, if there are lessons to be learned from this particular accident it's really important that not only Australia learns these, but the world learns them. So, we will be very focused on firstly, gathering that evidence and then conducting our analysis so that if we do have any early learnings for people, that we will broadcast those as quickly as we know them."
++BLACK FRAMES++
10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Superintendent Paul Condon, New South Wales Police:
"Yes, I can confirm that, they have not been removed from the site. We are hoping that we will have all three victims removed from the site today."
11. Hood and Condon speaking with officials
STORYLINE:
An Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) official said on Friday they believe an aerial water tanker which crashed killing three American crew members had just dropped a line of retardant on the wildfire it was trying to contain.
ATSB Chief Commissioner Greg Hood told reporters in the nearby town of Numeralla specialist investigators have been sent to the crash site at Peak View in the New South Wales state's Snowy Monaro region.
New South Wales Police Superintendent Paul Condon said his team was hoping to remove the victims' bodies from the crash site later on Friday.
The three firefighters have been identified by their employer.
The men who died in Thursday's crash of the C-130 Hercules plane were Captain Ian H McBeth, 44, of Great Falls, Montana; First Officer Paul Clyde Hudson, 42, of Buckeye, Arizona; and Flight Engineer Rick A DeMorgan Jr, 43, of Navarre, Florida, Canada-based Coulson Aviation said in a statement.
