"Yeah, I'd heard that the (United States) state department was asking us to leave, and to be honest with you that scares me, a lot. In ten years living here in China, I've never seen anything like this, not even close. This is a crazy situation to me, and the fact that our governments are taking such dire and drastic measures right now, really tells me that the situation is probably worse than what we've been led to believe, or what the numbers would even indicate."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) James Dickey, Kindergarten Teacher in Changsha, China:
"I am nervous right now, I'm pretty, I'm going to change that, I'm actually not just nervous, I'm really scared. Right now, I'm focused on getting my daughter and my ex-wife out of Wuhan, they're there in the epicentre. I just went to Beijing to get my daughter's passport straightened out so that they can leave, she's eight years old, I've got to get her out of here first, so I can't leave until that's done.

6. SOUNDBITE (English) James Dickey, Kindergarten Teacher in Changsha, China:
"I have a girlfriend here who is Chinese, and she lives with me, and she depends on me to get by. If I leave, she's going to be all alone in a city that's not her hometown. So, if I left her right now that would be a really, a really terrible thing to do, I think, just leaving her all by herself, I couldn't do that to her."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) James Dickey, Kindergarten Teacher in Changsha, China:
"Right now, I think I'm going to stay here. I've got my career here, which hopefully I'll be able to pick up as soon as all this is said and done. But right now, even though I feel really nervous and really scared, and don't know what's going to happen next, I think I'm just going to have to stay here and ride it out, unless somehow, some way, I can take her back with me. But the chances of that don't look very good, so I've got to stay here and take care, take care of my responsibilities."

"I thought like maybe it would be coming soon, and I, like as I was travelling to the US, I thought like this might... I wonder if I'm not going to be going back like at the same time that I was scheduled for. Although I didn't pack things appropriately, having that suspicion, I wish I had."

"I was planning on it before this notice (from the US State Department), because my school had sent out something that we were going to be doing online learning and the campus was closed for, it's still unclear as to how much time. And I have Type 1 diabetes. So, I really didn't want to go back because that's one of the vulnerable, more vulnerable populations. And I felt like it was just a safer place for me to stay here."

"Yeah, it was just like a confirmation of my plans. I wasn't really... it didn't freak me out any more. It definitely made me think, yeah, this is probably going to be a while and that it will affect a lot of things."

STORYLINE:
An American teacher living in China said he was "really scared" after hearing that the United States advised against all travel to China on Friday.
The US State Department's travel advisory came after the World Health Organization declared a global emergency over the outbreak of a new deadly virus that has spread to more than a dozen countries.
Americans currently in China are advised to consider departing using commercial flights.
"In ten years living here in China, I've never seen anything like this, not even close," said James Dickey, a kindergarten teacher living in Changsha.
China counted 9,692 confirmed cases with a death toll of 213, including 43 new fatalities.
The vast majority of the cases have been in Hubei province and its provincial capital, Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak. No deaths have been reported outside China.
China has placed over 50 million people in the region under virtual quarantine, while foreign countries have cut back severely on travel to the country and quarantined those who recently passed through Wuhan.
The virus is believed to have a two-week incubation period, during which those infected can pass on the illness even if they show no symptoms such as fever and cough.
Dickey used to live in Wuhan but recently moved to Changsha, outside the quarantine zone.
He has a daughter and an ex-wife who are stuck in Wuhan. He went to Beijing on Friday to renew his daughter's passport so that the pair could get on an evacuation flight planned in early February.
Even after his daughter safely leaves, though, Dickey says he's planning to stay because of his Chinese girlfriend, who can't leave.
"If I left her right now that would be a really terrible thing to do," Dickey said. "I couldn't do that to her."
Dickey said that he hopes things will soon return to normal.
Kelly Flanagan, an American school counsellor, who has lived in China since 2011, said she is planning to stay out of the country as she watches the virus spread from a previously planned vacation in the United States.
Flanagan, who has Type 1 diabetes, which adds to health risks during a virus outbreak, says she will stay in the US until things go back to normal in China.
