LEAD IN:
When Russian President Vladimir Putin delightedly received a prized Sarplaninac puppy in Belgrade earlier this year, it wasn't just a clever diplomatic move. Mr Putin's love of the big shaggy dog has revived interest in the old breed.
It hails from the mountains in north Macedonia, and there it is still thriving not just as a favoured pet, but as the shepherd's best friend.
STORYLINE:
Loyal, diligent and on the lookout for danger - this grand Sarplaninac sheepdog is protecting its flock.
Here in the Shar Mountains in the northwest of North Macedonia, Sarplaninac dogs are in their element.
And with big flocks of sheep to protect in these high altitude pastures, the dogs are working their hardest.
Farmer Fadil Dehari says Sarplaninac dogs are the pride of North Macedonia - an impressive working dog and a faithful companion.
"They would not let any wolf or bear come near the sheep. No way," he says.
The pastures where 41-year-old Dehari looks after flocks of sheep lie in the mountains surrounding the village of Vejce.
At an altitude of 1,700 metres (5,577 feet), these pastures are still dwarfed by snow-capped Kobilica peak, which towers 2,528 metres (8,294 feet) above the North Macedonia-Kosovo border.
Dehari works with a pack of nine Sarplaninac dogs up here, led by Shapi - an agile three-and-a-half year-old who he says is his favourite and who may one day help with Sarplaninac breeding programmes.
Together, Dehari, Shapi and the other dogs work a flock of 470 sheep, and recently they fended off a wild bear says Dehari.
Dog breeders say Sarplaninac dogs are in their element in an environment like this, where their strong protective instincts can be given full rein.
While the dog is also a popular pet, breeders in Skopje - North Macedonia's capital and largest city - say it's vital the dogs spend time in the mountains, lest their shepherding instincts be lost.
Nacko Savovski is one of the breed's biggest advocates, having raised hundreds of dogs at a breeding centre near the city.
"So far (since 1976) in our breeding farm we have raised over 800 young Sarplaninac dogs and this noble breed we are returning to the nature," he says.
Sarplaninac dogs are native to North Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo, and according to some accounts they have been present in the region since the tenth century BC.
It's thought Sarplaninac dogs originated in Asia, and were brought into the Balkans by prehistoric mass migrations.
Savovski runs through the breed's distinguishing traits:
"It has to be tall over 70 cm (27.5 inches), the shape of the body has to be rectangular, just like Hypo's, the length has to be 10 percent longer than the height, the hair is dense and pointy. All colours from white to dark grey can appear. And it is a dog that needs no training to serve what it is designed for - to protect sheep flocks from predators," he explains.
The Sarplaninac was first registered as a breed by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, or FCI - the world's largest canine organisation - in 1939 under the designation "Illyrian Shepherd Dog".
In 1957, after petitioning by breeders' groups in the former Yugoslavia, its listing was updated to "Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog Sharplanina".
In its formal entry today, the FCI describes the Sarplaninac as "of sturdy constitution, even disposition, good temperament, reliable, protective but not snappy".
Savovski says the breed has a proud history.
"We have also done a DNA isolation project on the breed, proving that the breed has been stabilised for years and years, with the same characteristics and temperament," he says.
Savovski adds that his focus as a breeder over four decades has been on ensuring a steady supply of working dogs - not just of dogs to be sold as pets.
"Seeing what kind of noble work is done at our breeding (centre), in 1998 the Henry Ford Foundation awarded us for preservation of natural rarities. Although there were many projects submitted for that competition, they found us doing something noble - returning the Sharplaninec to its natural habitat," he says.
And it's not just the Henry Ford Foundation that has recognised the importance of Savovski's work.
His dogs have also been acknowledged by the country's postage system.
"In 1999 a postage stamp was published depicting Sarplaninac and I am very glad that this very dog originates from our breeding ground," Savovski says.
In January President Vladimir Putin of Russia was presented with a Sarplaninac puppy by the Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic.
It's not the first time Mr Putin has been gifted a puppy and his love for dogs is well known as he already owns a black retriever who has appeared in many photos with him.
Since the break-up of the former Yugoslavia, the Sarplaninac dog has also assumed greater importance as a symbol of North Macedonia.
"The Sarplaninac breed has such importance, that since our country's independence it has been put on the main one denar coin," Savovski says.
It might be a lot of responsibility, but for the Sarplaninac, it's all in a day's work.
