"The nativity scene as the Pope remarks in the letter (Apostolic letter Admirabile signum) is not about the preciousness of the materials (used to make it). You can see here a big variety of materials, such as precious corals and old vinyl records that became the grotto of the nativity scene. You can also see plaster, polystyrene, corks and everything that is around us. There is an incredible variety of materials that become precious as they express the originality and creativity of the people that made the nativities. In each of these nativities the artists put a part of their lives."

LEADIN:
100 nativity scenes have gone on display in a hall near the Vatican in Rome.
Among the scenes are ancient and modern cribs made from a surprising array of materials - including clay, ceramic, old vinyl records, and even uncooked pasta.
STORYLINE:
The Nativity scene appears all over the world at Christmas time, and here in Rome it is being given several new interpretations.
The "100 Presepi in Vaticano" ("100 Cribs at the Vatican") exhibition is now in its 43rd year.
This year, it's moved from its former home at the Piazza del Popolo, to a more spacious display area in Sala San Pio X ("Saint Pius X Hall"), near St Peter's Basilica.
"100 Cribs at the Vatican" is an international exhibition of different representations of the birth of the baby Jesus, which Catholics celebrate on the 24th and 25th of December.
Archbishop Rino Fisichella says the exhibition is part of a beautiful Catholic tradition.
"Our intention is to try to preserve a beautiful and meaningful tradition," he says.
"It's a joy to see how many thousands of children with their parents and grandparents come here and take a look at each nativity scene. For us this is a way of evangelisation, because in the nativity scene we find the biggest mystery of our faith, which is God that become one of us."
The exhibition includes imaginings of the birth of Christ that are both traditional, and imaginative.
Pope Francis visited on 9 December, meeting with several artists and blessing visitors and staff.
The week before, on 1 December 2019, the Pontiff had travelled to the Italian town of Greccio, where it is believed Saint Francis of Assisi created history's first nativity scene.
It was during that trip that he published an apostolic letter about the importance of putting up nativity scenes, which he said were a "simple reminder" of "God's tender love".
While many of the artists have used traditional materials like ceramics, some have taken a more unconventional route.
Artist Myriam Lacerenza has used old vinyl records to recreate Jesus, Mary and the other important figures of the Christmas story.
"The nativity scene as the Pope remarks in the letter (Apostolic letter Admirabile signum) is not about the preciousness of the materials (used to make it)," says Archbishop Rino Fisichella.
"You can see here a big variety of materials, such as precious corals and old vinyl records that became the grotto of the nativity scene. You can also see plaster, polystyrene, corks and everything that is around us. There is an incredible variety of materials that become precious as they express the originality and creativity of the people that made the nativities. In each of these nativities the artists put a part of their lives."
Elsewhere, Gessica Mancini has created a nativity scene using crochet, while Giuseppe Altamura has used pasta, representing the city of Terlizzi in Italy's Apulia region.
Visitor Marco Bazon is impressed:
"For me this is all wonderful. Each one of these artists chose a way to express through their art the most important of the events, which is the day that Christ was born in our hearts and in the world," he says.
For Milena Coronel, this exhibition was one of the reasons she decided to come to Rome at Christmas time:
"I love this exhibition. In fact one of the reasons we organised our trip to Rome was exactly because we found out that this exhibition was going to take place here during these days. I love it. I have seen a lot of cultures identified in a scene that is so extraordinary such as Nativity so I congratulate them. It's impressive."
Luisa Cremona is a regular at this exhibition, and says she prefers the new location, near the Vatican, to the old one, on Piazza del Popolo.
"It's really beautiful. I visited the nativities when they were in the other location, and it was a little confusing. Here it's very organised and very beautiful. It's a good idea, and as it is so close to Saint Peter, it is easy to get to," she says.
Not all the nativity scenes are big - Annibale Vecere has made one inside a light bulb.
Others are grand - Marco Salvia and Cristina Fiorito have invoked the Neapolitan style of the 18th century.
And just up the road from the Sala San Pio X is the Vatican's own nativity scene, set up in St Peter's Square.
It's proving popular - much like nativity scenes in other parts of Italy where, despite secularisation and an increasingly diverse and multicultural society, cribs can still be regularly spotted.
