"You could see the US ambassador to Denmark tweeting about the visit just yesterday evening, so I think it took everybody inside the administration a bit by surprise that Trump reacted on this. "Yes there's going to be a lot of, also of my former colleagues in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and elsewhere, that have been planning this, including American diplomats as well, that have been planning this for a long time. It's always a big deal when a president comes to another country, particularly on a state visit. So in that sense it's also unusual and there'll be a lot of wasted diplomatic hours on this."

"It's also a little bit typical Trump of doing these sort of things spontaneously, off the cuff, so I think there will be other options to sort of build on relations. And as I mentioned earlier Danish and US relations go so much more beyond just this question of Greenland, with sort of the military cooperation, with the strong trade relations, the personal ties as well between Danes and Americans. So I don't think that will completely roil that. In any way, Trump is also a disputed figure, including in Denmark, so the visit would also have probably caused quite a number of demonstrations against it."
STORYLINE:
US President Donald Trump's decision to cancel a visit to Denmark next month was embarrassing for the United States, a Member of Parliament for the Danish Socialist People's Party told press on Wednesday.
Karsten Honge went on to say that the visit would have been an opportunity for the Danish public to send a clear message to American voters to "vote for another president next time."
Trump announced his decision by tweet on Wednesday after the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismissed the notion of selling the semi-autonomous territory of Greenland to the US as "an absurd discussion."
Trump reacted by tweeting "Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time."
There was no immediate reaction from the Danish government, but former government ministers were quick to speak out.
Trump's cancellation was "deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark," former Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt wrote on Twitter.
Trump had said Sunday that he was interested in buying Greenland for strategic purposes, but said a purchase was not a priority at this time.
White House spokesman Judd Deere later confirmed that the visit to Denmark has been cancelled.
Greenland sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
A 1.7-million-square-kilometre (660,000-square-mile) ice sheet covers 80 percent of the island.
