But the topic of sex is a no-go zone, it is a taboo in Africa. So, one, I have to source a lot of information about sex. I must respect the religion; I must respect the custom of African custom and have to get a unique way of passing sex education to people who really need it, but they cannot access it."

LEADIN:
A Kenyan man has become a sensation after taking sex education onto the streets of Nairobi where it is still considered a taboo subject.
The self styled "Condom King" uses his unique regalia and the informality of a road show to break down barriers and talk about HIV prevention.
STORYLINE:
A car crawling near a kerbside with sex workers. But this isn't a client seeking a women.
What's on offer here is not money, but free condoms.
When it comes to teaching people about the dangers of unprotected sex and HIV, Stanley Ngara believes in taking the message straight to the people who need to hear it most.
The condoms are from the LVCT (Liverpool Voluntary Counselling and Testing), a Kenyan NGO which is leading in HIV research and advocacy.
Ngara works for the charity, but knows that you can't stay inside a clinic to change minds and behaviours when it comes to the taboo topic of sex.
So he's as loud as he can possibly be, using his bright red uniform and outlandish regalia to break down embarrassment and get people to listen.
According to research that was concluded in 2018 by the HIV AIDS charity AVERT, Kenya has 1.6 million people living with the virus.
More than half of all new infections are among young people aged between 15 and 24.
Apart from the use of condoms, Ngara teaches other methods that can prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
"There is an increase in HIV infection among young people, and there are so many reasons, there are so many trends that are coming up, and one of the things that we feel that is very important is to give them an additional option, condoms being one of the first options and then adding 'PrEP' to support the young people," says Ngara.
By PrEP he's referring to pre-exposure prophylaxis, a combination of drugs aimed at preventing HIV.
Ngara uses every means at his disposal to spread the word, which means his team have to get into the spirit too.
According to the Kenya Aids Epidemic Report, there are around 100,000 new HIV/AIDS infections annually in Kenya with women more heavily affected than men.
Student Maimuna Wairimu believes Ngara's light hearted methods are more likely to be taken seriously.
She says: "So, trying to tell them to use the rubber, they feel like no, it is not sweet like when it's raw. So, I feel they should know the importance of using condoms and they would embrace the fact that we are here to help them that rubber is not just for the pleasure it is for protecting themselves too."
Ngara wants to visit people working on the streets of Nairobi because they are more at risk of contracting HIV.
"The informal sector community are at high risk of HIV, because of the nature of their work, they have low income and they are easy to be targeted by sex workers because they have a very easy relationship. They are the people who take lot of alcohol, and sometimes alcohol and decision making is a challenge that puts them at risk, and I feel if we target them we talk about alcohol, we talk about their own security we talk about health we talk about HIV and condoms and they really appreciate the messages that we keep on giving them every now and then. These are people that I visit at least twice a month because we need to have consistent message and consistent supply of condoms and commodities," he says.
With some, the message is finally getting through.
Mechanic Boniface Mwamoya says: "The reason why I have taken these condoms is in order to protect my body. If you are not careful in this life, you can find yourself in hospital."
Ngara acknowledges it is a challenge to speak about sex as openly as he does.
He researches facts about HIV risk to be able to understand the disease and more importantly, to be able to explain it to people in a culturally acceptable manner.
"When you talk about HIV, you must talk about sex because 90 percent of all new HIV infection is through unprotected sex with someone who is infected. But the topic of sex is a no-go zone, it is a taboo in Africa. So, one, I have to source a lot of information about sex. I must respect the religion; I must respect the customs of African custom and have to get a unique way of passing sex education to people who really need it, but they cannot access it," says Ngara.
It's why he's become known on the streets as the "Condom King".
