"It was a dream of mine, about ten years ago - even more - to create a centre in Johannesburg where we can look at other histories, of atrocities, of genocide, but learn from those about ourselves here in Africa and here in South Africa. It took a lot of hard work to get the partnership with the City of Johannesburg and J.P.C. (Johannesburg Property Company) and create an NGO, an educational trust, to work with other colleagues in South Africa, in Cape Town, in Durban, in many other countries in the world. Collect all the material, but then to create this centre."

"My father was a survivor. I worked in Rwanda for the last over twenty years. I am very connected to survivors of genocide, from many different genocides. And for me, it was important that humanity will learn - that we will not do the same mistakes again and again and again. So to stand here today and to have this opening, today, was emotional, but also a feeling of fulfilment. I am very, very happy that this is happening here in Johannesburg, here in South Africa, and here in Africa."

"It's important also to stop the temptation of violence - not only genocide - but gangs, rapes, all this violence which is spreading in that country, but in many other countries. So, we have to vaccinate (a) young generation about the temptation to harass, rape or kill another person."

"I feel so good when people come here and I tell them the story of surviving, how I survived the genocide. What makes me happy is that there's a people who still have a heart of feeling really bad at what other people went through. I've met different people, I've met young kids from different schools, I've got people from universities, I've met all the people - all of them. When they came here, I spoke to them. They feel very bad and when they go home, they think they must fight this, they must really. This should never happen again. That makes me happy and gives me hope."

LEADIN:
A new museum, exploring some of the darkest moments in human history, has opened in South Africa.
The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre looks at history and moral choices, from the Holocaust to the Rwandan Genocide of 1994.
STORYLINE:
Its founder says it's a painful story that must be told.
South Africa's Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre opened its doors Thursday (14 March), urging visitors to reflect on lessons from history.
Its exhibits look at the history of genocide in the 20th century, with a focus on the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
It offers many personal voices, including victims, perpetrators, resisters, rescuers and bystanders.
The exhibit includes collections of photos, testimonies, poetry, art, multimedia, timelines and artefacts.
It also includes contributions from survivors and families based in Johannesburg.
"It was important that humanity will learn - that we will not do the same mistakes again and again and again," says Tali Nates, the museum's founder and director.
Nates was inspired by the experiences of her father and uncle who were saved from the Nazis in World War 2 by Oskar Schindler.
Steven Spielberg's 1993 Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List" chronicled the life of German businessman Oskar Schindler's efforts to shield more than 1,000 Jews from Nazi death camps by hiring them to work in his Krakow factory.
"I am very, very happy that this is happening here in Johannesburg, here in South Africa, and here in Africa" says Nate.
The centre focuses on human rights issues, including xenophobia, racism and the promotion of social activism.
It aims to raise awareness of the evils of genocide and serves as a memorial to the millions of lives lost.
The Holocaust claimed the lives of more than six million European Jews during World War II.
Over 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu extremists during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
Sylvestre Sendacyeye is a survivor of the Rwandan Genocide. He's been living in Johannesburg since 2002.
He says that people willing to learn from the past gives him hope.
"They think they must fight this, they must really. This should never happen again. That makes me happy and gives me hope," he says.
Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre opened its doors Thursday (14 March). Entry is free.
