"Definitely both of these countries, as the second and third largest economy, and they also very highly dependent, more than 30 percent dependent, on foreign trade for their GDP. Therefore, the regional cooperation becomes utterly important right now also when China is under pressure from the United States. Japan's trade with China takes more than half of what we are dealing with the United States, so therefore, how these two second and third biggest economies can work together for regional cooperation and also for regional integration, for example, in the framework of RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) and also in the China-Japan-South Korea Free Trade Area. So this is really a big test of the friendship and of the ties that has been in existence, which is also on the side of warming up between China and Japan."

"So using multilateral vehicle or regional vehicle has always been Japan's preference, given that historic issue Japan had with many Asian countries. For Japan, it's actually much safe to play with all Asians, so I think Asia Development Bank was one, and RCEP was another. And for Japan, at least the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) is also another. So I think Japan can be fully committed, if China is willing to use more multilateral international vehicle for the regional Asian wide developments."

China-Japan ties become warmer after decades of ups and downs, and leaders of the two countries are expected to discuss some issues of common concern during Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to Japan, said experts.
President Xi will make a three-day visit to Japan from Thursday to attend the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan, where he is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. It will be Xi's first trip to Japan since he became president of China in 2013.
During an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), Liu Baocheng, dean of the Center for International Business Ethics from the University of International Business and Economics, said there is much room for China and Japan to have cooperation.
So this is really a big test of the friendship and of the ties that has been in existence, which is also on the side of warming up between China and Japan," said Liu.
RCEP is a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and the six Asia Pacific states with which ASEAN has existing free trade agreements, including Australia, China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea (ROK) and New Zealand.
Takuji Okubo, Chief Economist at Japan Macro Advisors, said both multilateral and regional cooperation serve Japan's interest.
