Hong Kong police on Wednesday voiced their firm opposition to violent acts caused by protesters in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
Tse Chun-chung, chief superintendent of the Public Relations Branch of the Hong Kong Police Force, said at a regular press briefing that people had recently put up posters and stickers in many public areas of the SAR to express their views. However, multiple riots also happened in those areas including 57 criminal cases.
Forty-seven people involved were arrested for offenses including criminal damage, fighting in a public area, assault and possession of an offensive weapon, according to Tse.
The chief superintendent stressed that the Hong Kong police attach great importance to those cases and will strictly enforce the law against any violent acts.
"I would like to call on the public to not resort to violence because of differences in opinions. The police will not tolerate any violent acts. Anyone who illegally commits violence will be dealt with according to the law, and brought to justice," said Tse.
He added that police enforcement does not vary based on the background, title or political stance of those involved in the cases.
Tse also said that the police fully respect people's right to express their opinions.
