STORYLINE:
The Archbishop of Paris Michel Aupetit said on Wednesday that like the resurrection the Notre Dame cathedral must be brought "back up" after it was ravaged in Monday's fire.
Aupetit spoke during a mass at the Church of Saint-Sulpice as part of a celebration the annual blessing of the oils during the Catholic Church's Holy Week.
The archbishop said the blaze which partially destroyed the gothic cathedral had generated "an extraodinary generous impulse" around the world with a huge sum already raised towards its restoration.
French First Lady Brigitte Macron attended the mass along with French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo and the head of Paris council region Valerie Pecresse.
The Church of Saint-Sulpice, the second-largest house of worship in Paris, is poised to become the replacement national place of worship during the five years or more that Notre Dame will be closed for repairs.
