"Right now, the population has gone down a bit. Last year there were about 700, and this year there are only about 500 left. This has happened because of the fact that we had a lot of shags among them last year, and we don't have a lot of ponds now with appropriate amounts of fish."

23. Wide of two clusters of birds in lake shallows
24. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Yury Babichev, Senior Inspector, Chernye Zemli Biosphere Reserve
"Manych is drying out. It's becoming shallow in some places, which means it's accessible to predators, and as soon as predators come into play, the colony's gone. We have Yeger Island right here, and last year the pelicans used it to nest. This year, the water is too shallow, and foxes have turned up, and so the pelicans and shags are gone."

"Food is in increasingly short supply, natural conditions are deteriorating, pollution is growing, and feeding even a modest number of offspring - they only lay a couple of eggs - is becoming increasingly difficult. So the population has been dropping."

LEAD IN:
In southern Russia, pollution and the drying out of a saltwater lake are thought to be affecting the migration cycles of two species of pelican.
Lake Manych-Gudilo is home to two different breeding populations of the bird, but numbers are down this year on previous surveys.
STORYLINE:
During the European summer, this shallow, saline lake in southern Russia's Republic of Kalmykia attracts thousands of birds.
Located between the Sea of Azov and the Caspian Sea, some of the birds here have journeyed thousands of miles.
While there are dozens of different species, it's the pelican population researchers are focussing on.
Lake Manych-Gudilo plays temporary home to two different species: the Great White Pelican, and the Dalmatian Pelican.
Pelicans live in many parts of the world, and in warmer climates they don't move around.
But at northern latitudes the Great White Pelican is fully migratory.
While the birds have been coming here for centuries, this year numbers are down.
Yury Babichev wants to know why.
"Have to assemble this boat here so we can go and keep the register of the birds," he says.
Babichev is a Senior Inspector at the Chernye Zemli Biosphere Reserve, which covers the lake.
The lake itself is 344 square kilometres in area, and has an average depth of just 0.6 metres.
But it's shrinking.
Babichev thinks that's the root of the problem.
"Right now, the population has gone down a bit," he explains.
"Last year there were about 700, and this year there are only about 500 left. This has happened because of the fact that we had a lot of shags among them last year, and we don't have a lot of ponds now with appropriate amounts of fish."
In 2017, Babichev says, surveys counted about 1,000 Great White Pelicans, so this year's 500 figure is a dramatic drop.
As the lake shrinks, he explains, some of the islands the pelicans once used to nest in have become peninsulas, attached to the shore.
He suspects that's deterring the birds, because it makes them easier prey for their predators.
"Manych is drying out. It's becoming shallow in some places, which means it's accessible to predators, and as soon as predators come into play, the colony's gone. We have Yeger Island right here, and last year the pelicans used it to nest. This year, the water is too shallow, and foxes have turned up, and so the pelicans and shags are gone," he explains.
The problems at this specific location are not affecting the global populations of these two pelican species.
According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the Great White Pelican is classified as of "least concern".
Its cousin, the Dalmatian Pelican, is faring less well, and is classified by the IUCN as "Near Threatened".
For environmental management teacher Natalia Shkarupina, who works at several schools and junior colleagues in Astrakhan, the problems faced by the pelicans at Lake Manych-Gudilo are complex.
"Food is in increasingly short supply, natural conditions are deteriorating, pollution is growing, and feeding even a modest number of offspring - they only lay a couple of eggs - is becoming increasingly difficult. So the population has been dropping," she explains.
For locals who've come to love the graceful pelicans' seasonal visits, the hope is that something can be done before all the flocks fly off beyond the horizon.
