STORYLINE:
Former U.S. President Barack Obama met with Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg in Washingon on Tuesday.
Video released by the Obama Foundation shows the former president and Thunberg talking about the teen's work on environmental issues, including her calls for urgent action on climate change.
The 16-year-old activist has gained worldwide attention by inspiring a series of protests and school strikes, including one set for Friday.
Obama asked Thunberg how the Friday strikes are going, to which she responded, "Very well," adding that the youth participants are "so eager" and "very enthusiastic."
Obama told Thunberg that he and she are "a team" before giving her a fist bump.
In a Twitter post just after their meeting, the former president said at 16, Thunberg "is already one of our planet's greatest advocates."
Thunberg is in Washington for several days of rallies and lobbying efforts ahead of Friday's global climate strike. She'll also address the U.N. Climate Action Summit in New York next week.
Thunberg gained global attention last month when the teen crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a solar-powered boat, landing in New York City on Aug. 28.
