LEADIN:
Wearable Technology has been named the top fitness trend for 2020.
From FitBits to iWatches, millions of adults now sport wearable devices as part of a growing movement of using technology to help us with our health.
STORYLINE:
It's no surprise wearable technology is predicted to be the top fitness trend for 2020.
More than 3,000 health and fitness professionals surveyed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) said wearable technology will be the top trend in fitness in the coming year.
ACSM released the results of its annual fitness trend forecast in the article "Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2020" published in the November/December issue of ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal.
At Pulse Fitness Studio in Sherman Oaks, California, wearables are seen throughout fitness classes and private training sessions.
ACSM says advances in technology have made it easier than ever to collect important health metrics.
Wearable technology includes fitness trackers, smart health watches, heart rate monitors and GPS tracking devices.
They monitor fitness and exercise, heart levels and calorie consumption, while doubling up as phones, texting devices, and maps plus more.
Mark Harari, celebrity trainer and owner of Pulse Fitness Studio in Sherman Oaks, California says wearable technology has become ingrained in today's culture and that it helps you up your game everyday.
"Some people like them simply for the motivation factor. It's become a competitive thing within themselves so it's really not about competing with other people as much as it is with themselves."
The devices allow people to work with fitness professionals and health care providers to improve their exercise efficiency, kick start healthy lifestyles and ultimately manage disease.
Tim Hyde, Studio City Realtor, wears an Apple Watch because it syncs up with his phone. He says it's a five in one device for him.
"I wear it because it works with my phone so the contacts for my phone are also in my watch. I can keep track of my pulse and I can also keep track of how many steps I've taken and the exercise that I'm doing throughout the day. I can also look at my text messages and I can look at news and I can look at email on here when I need to."
Michelle Mix, a PA from Sherman Oaks, wears an iWatch and says she relies on it for a whole range of functions:
"It's used for not only just time, it tracks your steps, it tracks your calorie burn throughout the day, your activity level, it tracks how every time you stand, you can also do smart things with it, get text messages, pictures, videos, listen to music. My favourite thing about it is the calorie burn, especially when I'm working out, just to make sure that I hit my 500 active calories every single day."
At the West Hollywood, California branch of Best Buy Co., Inc. the American Multinational consumer electronics retailer, wearables are front and centre of the store.
Brands include Apple, FitBit, Samsung, Garmin and Michael Kors.
The ACSM says the wearable tech industry shows no signs of slowing down with stores stocking more and more of it.
Shreetanu Das is the connected home expert at Best Buy West Hollywood.
"For the first time some of these health and wearable technologies can actually track down your heart rate rhythm, how cool is that, which means that if there is some sort of changes in your rhythm or anything it can instantly notify you and it can give you the reports to your doctors also," he says.
Dr Eli Gang is a cardiologist and cardiac electro physiologist with Cardiovascular Medical Group of Southern California one of the leading facilities for top cardiologists in the USA.
He says wrist devices can also help people avoid over exercising, which can have an adverse effect. He warns that is is important not to let working out become an obsession.
"Quite surprisingly to some people, it's been shown that if you exercise very vigorously too much, specifically in some studies more than four hours per week of very intense exercise, ironically your risk of mortality actually goes up so the curve is actually a U shaped curve, on one end is the sedentary person in the bottom of the U shaped curve, which is the least amount of mortality or risk for cardiovascular disease, is moderate amount of exercise and the risk of the curve goes back up to the other arm of the U with higher risk for excessive intensive exercise."
Gang advises that people should achieve a target heart rate to enable them to know whether they are working out optimally.
A target heart rate is 220 beats per minute minus your age, according to Gang.
He says the proper amount of working out is now said to be 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise and half of that - maybe 75 minutes of intensive exercise.
