STORYLINE:
NORTH KOREA CELEBRATES CINEMA AT THE PYONGYANG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
In North Korea, film festivals are a bit different to the rest of the world.
There's no red carpet and there are no international stars. But in recent years, Pyongyang has tried to inject a little bit of glamour into its international film festival.
And the most important thing is that that festival brings a rare variety of officially-sanctioned entertainment to the North Korean capital.
Many years ago, a showing of British film "Bend It Like Beckham" resulted in a packed cinema with people crowding the steps between the aisles.
This is because, day to day, there is only a limited variety of foreign entertainment officially available for North Koreans to watch.
The latest edition of the Pyongyang International Film Festival opened Friday 20 September at the International Cinema House on Yanggakdo, an island in the Taedong River that flows through the centre of the North Korean capital.
Rather than A-list stars, from North Korea or around the world, government officials are the guests of honour at the ceremony - Vice Premier Jon Kwang Ho, and the Chairman of the Pyongyang City People's Committee Cha Hui Rim, joined Jong Yong Nam, Director General of the National Administration of the Motion Picture Industry, to add importance to the event.
This year, there are four hundred films on show, including feature films, documentaries, and animation from countries from Russia to Cuba and the UK to Iran.
Foreign participants at the festival are few. But the jury does include foreigners with film making experience, and they do vote for the prizes which are awarded at the closing ceremony.
The first film shown this year, at the opening ceremony, was the Russian war film "T-34". It's a patriotic tale of glory under fire, with parallels to the kind of war film that North Korea has made in past decades based on its own history of battling Japanese occupation, and the Korean War.
The 17th Pyongyang International Film Festival runs until Friday 27 September.
