2. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Kidman, actress - on being familiar with the story:
"We both were - I mean I was familiar in terms of the title. I had not read the book and I read the screenplay. And I was lucky that I hadn't read the book because I was able to digest the screenplay and go, 'OK, this were – I feel this character and I can feel this story and the emotion of it. And then I went and read the book."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman, actors - on the terror scene:
(Reporter: "Was that ever a concern of yours that some act of terror might prevent the release of this film for at least delay it?")
Elgort: "That would be awful. Just not, not for the film's sake. Just yeah. Hopefully, there are not too many more acts of terror."
Kidman: "No, I suppose my mind didn't go to that because I was so in the story. And that sort of seems – no, it didn't go to that place, but when you say that I simply go, ooh."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicole Kidman, actress - on the film's director:
"You know, when you talk about John Crowley and the way in which he directs, he's so rigorous. That was necessary for this because this is dense, and the material is dense, and the language is a particular language. You need that sort of rigorous direction. I would feel very abandoned if I hadn't had him going, 'OK, this is how it's gonna be constructed and molded.' And his attention to detail."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Ansel Elgort, actor - on the effect of his director:
"Pulling out is a great way to put it. I did feel like he was pulling things out of me. Like a dentist pulling teeth. (Nicole Kidman laughs) But sometimes you go to the dentist for is because they need to pull the tooth out. And it might be painful, but afterwards it's better that you got them pulled."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ansel Elgort, actor - on his character's motivation:
"I guess it's interesting you say he's not quite there in certain ways, yet he is sort of. There's so much going on. He's under so much stress and so much pressure. So much has built up on him over the years. I feel like he'd be the kind of person, you know, you'd go to give a back rub to, and he'd be like, 'Jesus, you are like you can't even get in there.' That's Theo, and the only way he can get some release is by taking OxyContin at this point, or heroin, which I know nothing about. I wouldn't even try it. I wasn't interested in trying it, but yeah it was - it was tough to do to try to bring him to life."

STORYLINE:
ANSEL ELGORT SAYS BRINGING HIS LATEST CHARACTER TO LIFE IN 'THE GOLDFINCH' WAS LIKE 'PULLING TEETH'
Ansel Elgort says his latest character was tough to bring to life.
He stars in "The Goldfinch" alongside Nicole Kidman as Theo Decker (played, at 13, by Oakes Fegley and as an adult by Ansel Elgort), a young man who is bound by a childhood trauma that he's never been able to convince himself was not his fault.
His mother died, along with many others, in a bombing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Directed John Crowley, Elgort likened portraying the traumatized character to "pulling teeth."
"There's so much going on. He's under so much stress and so much pressure. So much has built up on him over the years," explains Elgort.
Theo attempts to dull his emotional pain with the use of drugs, which is something Elgort says he knows "nothing about."
"The only way he can get some release is by taking OxyContin at this point, or heroin," explains Elgort. "I wouldn't even try it. I wasn't interested in trying it, but yeah it was - it was tough to do to try to bring him to life."
Kidman describes Crowley's approach to directing as "rigorous" but "necessary for this because this is dense, and the material is dense, and the language is a particular language."
"You need that that sort of rigorous direction, I would feel very abandoned if I hadn't had him going, 'OK, this is how it's gonna be constructed and molded, and his attention to detail," Kidman said.
"The Goldfinch" opens in U.S. theaters on 13 September 2019.
