6. SOUNDBITE (English) Jens Laerke, spokesperson, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs:

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jens Laerke, spokesperson, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs:
"We are seeing a military escalation, absolutely, no doubt about that. Now, after eight years of war in Syria, I think every time that we kind of reach the limit of the language that we have, we speak about disasters, catastrophes, 'this is the end', 'meltdown of humanity' - I recall many of these words having been used here - we see something even worse."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Jens Laerke, spokesperson, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs:
"Notwithstanding the fact that any health facility is already fully protected under International Humanitarian Law, it is illegal to target them."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Jens Laerke, spokesperson, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs:
"The status of healthcare in Syria at large and in particular in Idlib was already appalling. What we are seeing, as I mentioned now, is that even though facilities have not been hit, they fear that they may be hit. So doctors, health care personnel, are leaving. Patients are not going to those hospitals, understandably."
13. Cutaway reporters
14. SOUNDBITE (English) Jenifer Fenton, spokesperson, Office of the UN Special Envoy for Syria:
"If there remains a continuation in the escalating violence in and around the Idlib de-escalation area, it is obvious that a humanitarian catastrophe could be triggered. The Senior Humanitarian Advisor noted this to the Humanitarian Task Force Members and called on them to take meaningful actions. All parties must uphold their obligations under International Law and immediately stop attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities, schools, markets and places of worship."

STORYLINE:
A United Nations official says he's running out of words to describe what is happening to Syria after eight years of conflict.
Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN Office of Humanitarian Affairs said on Friday, "We speak about disasters, catastrophes, 'this is the end', 'meltdown of humanity' - I recall many of these words having been used here - we see something even worse."
Laerke said there had been a military escalation in the country with daily reports of civilians and civilian infrastructure coming under attack from  airstrikes, artillery shelling and barrel bombs.
Attacks have been stepped up in the north west with the Syrian government and its Russian backer relentlessly and systematically striking residential areas, hospitals, markets, crops and infrastructure to break the will of the population and pressure people to flee, according to observers, rights groups and residents.
It's a tried-and-true method that worked for President Bashar Assad's forces in their previous, destructive campaigns that retook the city of Aleppo in 2016 and other strategic territories.
Laerke said that since April, there had been 25 confirmed attacks on healthcare facilities in the north-west and at least six health workers killed.
Thirty schools had been targeted since 30 May, 23 of them in Idlib alone he told reporters in Geneva.
