"What looks most likely to gain the largest number of MPs to support it is a softer version of Brexit, something that takes us into a world of what is often called Norway Plus, something where Britain remains in the customs union and /or in the single market, that is, in a sense, close to what the Labour party want, they have their own proposals for this but I suspect it is going to be closer to the soft end of the range in terms of Brexit rather than the harder end."

7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Tony Travers, political analyst from the London School of Economics:
"It's absolutely not certain the government will get behind it, these are called indicative votes – they are a way of testing opinion but remember there are various hurdles beyond that because the government will in effect have to feel it is an instruction to carry this forward – whatever came out, if something did – and then the EU would have to agree to it, or an extension to negotiate whatever it was as well. So, this is very much the beginning of the process rather than the end of it, but it does begin to test in a slightly more open way what MPs will actually vote for rather than all the things they have said they will not vote for."

9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Tony Travers, political analyst from the London School of Economics:
"Well I think this leaves the meaningful vote in slightly better condition actually, because the very fact that parliament is voting in this indicative way, which could lead via various difficult hurdles to a softer Brexit, is convincing a number of hard-line pro-Brexiteers that after all Theresa May's deal is better than no deal because at least it gets them out of the EU. Or, at least it's better than a softer deal, or in some cases no deal, because at least it gets Britain out of the EU, it keeps us on track and, in that sense, Theresa May's deal is actually helped by this parliamentary process in a strange way."

STORYLINE:
As Britain's parliamentarians prepare to take control of the Brexit process, one analyst said that a softer form of Brexit was the most likely option to gain support in the House of Commons.
"What looks most likely to gain the largest number of MPs to support it is a softer version of Brexit, something that takes us into a world of what is often called Norway Plus, something where Britain remains in the customs union and or in the single market," said London School of Economics political analyst Tony Travers.
Travers, however, cautioned that this was only the start of the process, and it was by no means certain that the government or the EU would get behind any possible plan that parliament approved.
He also conceded that there could be a swell of support for Prime Minister Theresa May's twice-defeated withdrawal deal, because Brexit supporters might see it as the only viable option left to ensure that the UK exits the EU.
