Jordan: "The first thing that really stood out about the project was Tarell, meeting him. I got a chance to meet him. I sat down and we had a pretty long conversation that ended in tears."
McCraney: "You can't bring him nowhere, man. You're going to tell -"
Jordan: "On both sides." "
McCraney: "You didn't cry. I cried."
Jordan: "On the inside. I was crying on the inside, you know what I'm saying? I was trying to be strong."
McCraney: "Don't be your emotional self in front of MBJ, because you will hear about it for the next 15 years."
Jordan: "But it good. It was liberating. You feel me? It was a honest meeting. We sat down."
McCraney: "Fam. Hey, man. I ain't cry. I ain't cry."
Jordan:  "No but it was it was the first time honestly that I actually heard my own internal thoughts through somebody else. You know like the things that he experienced growing up, you know, family, throughout his community, the choices, the mental struggle of trying to make the right decision, trying to make the right choices, and trying to burden himself with being the man in the family taking care of everybody. Trying to fix everything for everyone and putting yourself last. You know, I think that like all those things to actually hear somebody else say it, I like wow okay -- I'm not the only person that thinks like that or feels that way."

"M.B.J. and I didn't grow up in the same environment and yet we were burdened with some of the same intersections and that means that there are more people around the world who are indeed needing space at the hearth. You know we all need the warmth of these stories to remind ourselves to see ourselves better. And so that was one of the reasons why we wanted to be our OWN as well. Because we wanted to be amongst stories about black people. Right. This show is black - blackity black black black."

"But David is night and day different than Chiron. Chiron asks all the time -- is being asked all the time: 'Who is you?' David is not only showing you who he can become in the moment but he's deciding, faster than anybody you know, how to make himself into another person that fast. He walks into a school, I'm a new person. He walks out of school, I'm another person. I'm in front of the drug boys, I'm a different person. And that dexterity to me is a whole avenue of humanity that we experience in the black community that we don't talk about, that we haven't talked about. At least I haven't seen it."

Jordan: "It's really something for everybody. We're not really trying to isolate one demo and be like, 'All right this is a guy show full of testosterone and adrenaline and all that good stuff, violence and whatever it is.' But no, hopefully the show is like a full meal. Like we want you to laugh, we want you to cry, we want you to feel you know sad, we want you to be happy. We want you to feel inspired, we want you to feel frustrated with the situations that go on, on the daily. We want you to feel motivated to like just be a part of the conversation."

STORYLINE:
MICHAEL B. JORDAN'S EMOTIONAL CONNECTION TO NEW SHOW 'DAVID MAKES MAN'
Michael B. Jordan had an emotional first meeting with "Moonlight" screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney.
The star of "Creed" and "Black Panther" is the producer of McCraney's new TV series "David Makes Man," which premiered Wednesday (14 AUGUST 2019) on Oprah Winfrey's OWN network.
"I sat down and we had a pretty long conversation that ended in tears," Jordan said. "It was it was the first time honestly that I actually heard my own internal thoughts through somebody else. You know like the things that he experienced growing up, family, throughout his community, the choices, the mental struggle of trying to make the right decision, trying to make the right choices, and trying to burden himself with being the man in the family taking care of everybody. Trying to fix everything for everyone and putting yourself last. You know I think that like all those things to actually hear somebody else say it, I like wow okay, I'm not the only person that thinks like that or feels that way."
The series follows a 14-year-old in South Florida navigating relationships at school and with drug dealers in his neighborhood. McCraney says it has universal themes, but is also very specific to the black experience.
"M.B.J. and I didn't grow up in the same environment and yet we were burdened with some of the same intersections and that means that there are more people around the world who are indeed needing space at the hearth. You know we all need the warmth of these stories to remind ourselves to see ourselves better. And so that was one of the reasons why we wanted to be our OWN as well. Because we wanted to be amongst stories about black people. Right. This show is black - blackity black black black," McCraney said.
McCraney says the central character in "David Makes Man," based in part on his own life, is very different from Chiron, the one at the center of "Moonlight," at least in part because of his ability to "code switch."
"Chiron asks all the time - is being asked all the time: 'Who is you?' David is not only showing you who he can become in the moment but he's deciding faster than anybody you know how to make himself into another person that fast. He walks into a school, I'm a new person. He walks out of school, I'm another person. I'm in front of the drug boys, I'm a different person. And that dexterity to me is a whole avenue of humanity that we experience in the black community that we don't talk about, that we haven't talked about. At least I haven't seen it," he said.
Jordan hopes the series sparks conversations.
"Hopefully the show is like a full meal. Like we want you to laugh, we want you to cry, we want you to feel you know sad, we want you to be happy. We want you to feel inspired, we want you to feel frustrated with the situations that go on, on the daily. We want you to feel motivated to like just be a part of the conversation," he said.
