LEADIN
Muslims in Pakistan are making final preparations before embarking on the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Special training and vaccinations are being given, to ensure the pilgrims travel safely.
STORYLINE:
Pilgrims fill the Hajj complex in the Pakistani capital.
They're here to pray and learn about the journey they're about to embark on.
This year as many as 20,0000 Pakistanis will make the journey to Mecca, the birthplace and spiritual home of Islam.
A strict set of guidelines and requirements are laid out by the Islamic canonical law, or Shariah, that every pilgrim must adhere to during their visit to Mecca.
Under the watchful eye of their trainer, pilgrims will cover every aspect of the pilgrimage, from attire to behaviour, from the various rituals and their proper chronology and method.
"I spend a whole month teaching and guiding pilgrims," says, trainer Sabir Sultan.
"We help them physically, spiritually and in Islamic teachings, and we tell them that a Hajji (hajj pilgrim) is a representative of Allah. When a pilgrim returns after they perform Hajj, a change will happen in his/her life, his/her Hajj should be perfect as well as Hajj pilgrim should be a good person."
Sultan demonstrates how to wear the special garment called an 'Ihram'.
Ihram clothing is specially designed for Hajj, otherwise it cannot be performed.
Pilgrim, Muhammad Shoaib says, "before I didn't know about the basic principles of Hajj or how to perform Umrah. I learnt it here."
The pilgrims receive vaccinations for influenza, meningitis and polio before they can be cleared to fly.
Dr. Joya Fatima explains, "we are doing three types of vaccination over here for the Hajji's, for the pilgrims."
"We are carrying out the meningitis vaccine over here, the influenzas vaccine and the polio drops."
Outside the Hajj centre there is a shop were pilgrims can buy essentials from bags to shoes.
Pilgrim, Aftab Ahmed notes that, "there is lot of importance of Hajj in Islam."
Islam requires that all Muslims who are financially and physically able make the pilgrimage at least once to Mecca.
"For the person who can afford, the Hajj is a religious duty for him. There is a Fatwa of Hazrat Umar (Muslim caliph)," says Ahmed.
A Fatwa is a non-binding legal opinion on a point of Islamic law (sharia) given by a qualified jurist in response to a question posed by a private individual, judge or government.
Ahmed goes on to say that "If the person can afford and he does not perform Hajj, he should be declared as a non-Muslim and pay Jaziya".
Jizya or jizyah is a per capita yearly tax historically levied on non-Muslim subjects, called the dhimma, permanently residing in Muslim lands governed by Islamic law.
For the first time this year a pre-departure immigration facility was opened at Islamabad International Airport.
The facility hopes to help ease the procedure for pilgrims heading to Saudi Arabia.
On hand: a team of Saudi officials to carry out the immigration process for Pakistani pilgrims before they leave for Mecca.
Haseeb Ahmed Siddiqui, Director of the Directorate of Hajj, explains, "the whole immigration is been conducted as a pilot project at Islamabad and if this project, and by the grace of God so far it has been successful, proves (to be) successful that will be implemented in all major cities where Pakistani pilgrims proceed in future."
In a statement, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony said the project aims to reduce the immigration process of Pakistani pilgrims by 10-12 hours.
With their documents, immunisations and luggage in order, and training complete, the pilgrims are ready to start the journey to Mecca.
Pilgrim, Sajjid Kiyani says, "I have been trying to perform Hajj for the last four years but this year I am going with my mother and sister. I will pray for forgiveness and may Allah accept my prayers for external life."
The Saudi Arabian government oversees the Hajj pilgrimage every year, as part of its stewardship of Islam's holiest sites.
Hajj this year will begin August 9 and finish August 14, 2019.
