"I knew it. In retrospect I think I kind of knew I wanted to be an actor my whole life. But it wasn't actually until the military that I, you know, I'm like OK when I have my freedom again, I know I would - want to pursue being an actor. It didn't seem like a realistic job where I was from, and there wasn't really a lot of opportunities. But the military kind of strips you away from _ I think even if it is an illusion _ being scared of the civilian world that you can't survive, you know. Once you go through that, you're like, 'Oh, I can handle being... New York is where theater and actors that I like seem to live, so, I'll just go there and if it doesn't work out, I'll live off the streets.' You know, you have that kind of like survival mentality in the military. It gives you a lot of confidence going back out into the world."

(Reporter: Is that why give back so much when it comes to veteran's issues?)
"Yeah. And also, it's a community that I feel has been - has been kind of told that they won't understand theater, which just makes, it pisses me off. That they won't understand a (Sam) Shepherd play, because they deal with guns. Like I don't get the connection, actually. If anything, you know, theater in New York can get a little bit like recycled air. And it's amazing how much you take it outside of New York, language becomes a weapon in a way to different communities. You know, it's still very challenging and confronting. And they're often not given that opportunity, because they're kind of - there's this idea that they won't get it, or they won't understand some kind of high elitist art form, which I think is total bullshit. So that's in part. There's a lot of reasons why, but that's one of the reasons. I'm aware of the effect of like what theater can have, you know, it can - it can help you articulate a feeling in a way that you didn't have the language for before. And what better community to share that with than the military."

"I mean it's all kind of a challenge. The language in this play is very particular, and the turns the character makes are so severe and seemingly out of the blue that - because the pace is so fast, it kind of requires you to work on it very slow. I knew we had a very small rehearsal time. We only had like three weeks, so to be patient and trust that it would come together eventually was really difficult."

"I love the potential that it could be a disaster at any minute. I love that idea that of - Michael (Mayer) gave me a lot of leeway to kind of - he gives me zones, you know, to kind of be at certain times, but we didn't set particular blocking. I mean we set the general blocking of where to be, but that kind of, (we're) inventing it every night. I know in film, you can do that a lot, and hopefully, if you get a chance to do a lot of takes, you can invent and explore. But then we're only going to pick one. I know at the end of theater; you never figure it out. So, you have eight shows a week to try to keep exploring. I love that part of it."

STORYLINE:
ADAM DRIVER CREDITS MILITARY SERVICE FOR SUCCESS AS AN ACTOR
Adam Driver was home alone doing the dishes when his agent called with the news of his Tony nomination. But since his wife was out of town, there was no one to share the news with, so he just finished the dishes.
Driver got the nod for his work as Pale in the revival of Lanford Wilson's "Burn This."
Over the past decade, Driver has amassed an impressive acting career, with accolades ranging from his work on the HBO series, "Girls," to his more recent Oscar nomination for "BlacKkKlansman." And coming up, it's his last turn as Kylo Ren as the "Star Wars" saga comes to an end.
While the roles are diverse, the foundation for Driver's success centers around his military service. Driver, who joined the Marines shortly after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, credits his time as a Marine with providing the courage he needed taking a chance at becoming an actor.
"I wanted to be an actor my whole life. But it wasn't actually until the military that I, you know, I'm like OK when I have my freedom again, I know I would - want to pursue being an actor," Driver said.
He added: "It didn't seem like a realistic job where I was from, and there wasn't really a lot of opportunities. But the military kind of strips you away (of) being scared of the civilian world that you can't survive," Driver said.
His service time helped tear down some of the inhibitions one may face when pursuing an acting career, including relocating to the big city.
"New York is where theater and actors that I like seem to like live, so, I'll just go there and if it doesn't work out, I'll live off the streets. You know, you have that kind of like survival mentality in the military. It gives you a lot of confidence going back out into the world," Driver said.
Not long after kicking off his acting career, Driver took action to help his fellow military veterans with his charity, Arts in the Armed Forces. The organization is dedicated to providing arts programming for active duty service members, veterans, military support staff, and their families.
It's a segment of the population that's important to him.
"It's a community that I feel has been - has been kind of told that they won't understand theater, which just makes, it pisses me off. That they won't understand a (Sam) Shepherd play, because they deal with guns. Like I don't get the connection, actually. If anything, you know, theater in New York can get a little bit like recycled air. And it's amazing how much you take it outside of New York, language becomes a weapon in a way to different communities," Driver said.
So, it frustrates him when detractors marginalize veteran's appreciation of theater.
"It's still very challenging and confronting. And what better community to share that with than the military," Driver.
As for his performance in "Burn This," tackling a Lanford Wilson play is no easy task, made more difficult with a limited rehearsal period.
"I mean it's all kind of a challenge. The language in this play is very particular, and the turns the character makes are so severe and seemingly out of the blue that - because the pace is so fast, it kind of requires you to work on it very slow. I knew we had a very short rehearsal time. We only had like three weeks, so to be patient and trust that it would come together eventually was really difficult," Driver said.
In the revival of the 1987 play about a group of friends and family coping with a tragedy, Driver stars opposite Keri Russell.
He thrives on the play being so complex.
"I love the potential that it could be a disaster at any minute," Driver said.
And it's that challenge that keeps him interested.
"You have eight shows a week to try to keep exploring. I love that part of it," Driver said.
He also loved being part of the "Star Wars" saga, so when asked how he feels about hanging up his light saber, Driver had mixed feelings.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Driver joked. "I know what you're talking about. I don't know. I don't know."
"That's just the part where I'll trail off and not answer." Driver said before heading to the theater for his matinee.
