The fact is there are all kinds of ways the system of college admissions in America, especially the elite schools, there are so many ways that it's played and a lot of them are a little, they're not illegal, but they're a little unethical perhaps. And the system as an unethical way to favor the rich and the well-connected has been the way it's been forever."

"I think it's worse and worse and worse, in part because a lot of the parents, there was some memo that went out to parents of children this age: do everything for your kids, hover in their lives, make everything possible. I'm not sure why they do that, but the fact is breaking a law, having a stranger take the college admissions test for your child --it's unheard of. But yet, I guess there are parents who feel 'I don't want to let my kid down'. You know what, it would be better to let your kid down, because children who get into college knowing that they were completely ill-suited for this school and unworthy are going to feel insecure while they are there. And I've heard of parents who actually write their kids' college papers."

"I always thought --not being an athlete and not having children who are athletes-- that the people who got in as athletes were in a very special golden place, where they have been observed and observed and all the coaches knew them, and they've been recruited specifically in a very competitive field because of their athletic prowess. So I didn't even know that that happened. I thought that these colleges, let's say especially USC [University of Southern California], value their sports program so highly that they would never ever trample on it or let anything terrible happen to it. So, of course, those people have to go, and of course, it's terrible for the kids who work hard, who go to practice before dawn every day, who knock themselves out, who have no social life, who work like crazy just to get on a team and don't get in even at their first or second choice."

The colleges admissions system in the United States has been plagued by unethical behavior that favors the rich and well-connected forever, said best-selling writer Lisa Birnbach, on a China Global Television Network (CGTN) program recently.
Birnbach, an award-winning journalist and author of more than 20 books including "The Official Preppy Handbook", made the comments in the wake of a nationwide college admissions scandal that has implicated 50 people, including celebrity parents, sports coaches, and test administrators.
"It's been going on forever, and in fact a lot of debate --at least here in New York-- is all the influences that we look for to help our kids, a letter from the senator that we used to know, or the letter from a donor to the school on our kid's behalf --how different is that? The fact is there are all kinds of ways the system of college admissions in America, especially the elite schools, there are so many ways that it's played and a lot of them are a little, they're not illegal, but they're a little unethical perhaps. And the system as an unethical way to favor the rich and the well-connected has been the way it's been forever," she explained.
Some parents have become obsessed with helping their children succeed, but Birnbach argues that it's better for children to experience disappointment than to send them to a university where they are not ready to thrive on their own merits.
And I've heard of parents who actually write their kids' college papers," said Birnbach.
Many student athletes are held in high esteem by teachers, parents, and their fellow classmates for their hard work and dedication; that sports programs were used as back doors for rich kids to enter prestigious universities Birnback finds especially egregious.
So, of course, those people have to go, and of course, it's terrible for the kids who work hard, who go to practice before dawn every day, who knock themselves out, who have no social life, who work like crazy just to get on a team and don't get in even at their first or second choice," she said.
A total of 50 people including celebrity parents, coaches and test administrators were charged last Tuesday in a nationwide college admissions cheating and recruitment scheme that sought to help applicants win admission to elite universities including Yale, Stanford, UCLA, Georgetown, and the University of Texas.
According to the indictment, the conspiracy involved bribing university athletic coaches and administrators in admitting students under the guise of being recruited as student-athletes, regardless of their athletic abilities, or even, prosecutors said, when they didn't play the sport at all. Some of the defendants went as far as falsifying athletic profiles in order to make their children look like successful athletes.
It also involved hiring ringers to take college entrance exams for students or bribing insiders at testing centers to correct students' answers.
