SHOTLIST: Sydney, Australia.  5th December  2019.
1. 00:00 SOUNDBITE (English) Raelene Castle, Rugby Australia Chief Executive, (on whether they backed down in going for a settlement):
"We didn't back down. What I just said is right, we needed to give the game cost certainty. The feedback we were getting from our Rugby community was that they wanted this matter settled. They want to go into the New Year knowing that they can go in with a clean slate and start talking about Rugby again instead of talking about this case."
2. 00:24 SOUNDBITE (English) Raelene Castle, Rugby Australia Chief Executive, (on whether Rugby Australia 'got it wrong'):
"No, we didn't get it wrong. At the end of the day, we stood up for the values of Rugby Australia. The person that chose to break the code of conduct was found guilty, his contract was ultimately terminated because of that - that stands up. That continues to say, this is an inclusive sport, behaviour and commentary of this type is not acceptable in our sport and everybody in Rugby needs to be included regardless of what their background is."
3. 00:51 SOUNDBITE (English) Raelene Castle, Rugby Australia Chief Executive, (on trying to settle before now):
"I think we've tried, I think we've tried all along to handle this and get the game - and you know, I'm personally really sad. I'm personally really sad that we've found ourselves in this situation. My belief was that we had an agreement where we could both exist. Israel could continue to play football, he could continue to be a proud man of faith, and Rugby Australia could live by its values and that was absolutely where we started this new contract. That's the agreement that I believe we had but ultimately it wasn't the case."
4. 01:26 SOUNDBITE (English) Raelene Castle, Rugby Australia Chief Executive, (on the board discussing the settlement):
"Yeah of course, that's the process. We knew going into the court ordered settlement process, because I think that's the other important thing, this is court ordered. The court wants you to try and settle this as an employment dispute. We went to that mediation, as you know, it was 12 hours of mediation that didn't get completed until two days later and ultimately we had a number that we knew was more cost effective for us to settle than it was to go to court."
5. 01:57 SOUNDBITE (English) Raelene Castle, Rugby Australia Chief Executive, (on whether Israel Folau feels vindicated by the settlement):
"I think if you look at the statement that was drafted yesterday, and a lot of work went into that statement by both parties, there was an apology both ways. That apology was both ways because this has been very stressful, it's been a very hard time for the Folaus and it has been a very hard time for Rugby Australia but at the end of the day, it was for that 'difficult time' that we apologised for but we stand by our decision and the process we have been through."
6. 02:27 SOUNDBITE (English) Raelene Castle, Rugby Australia Chief Executive, (on whether Israel Folau is welcome back in Rugby in Australia):
"Well, never say never right because that would be crazy for me to say that. What we have is a value 'dis-alignment' if that's the right word, and at the end of the day I don't believe that he would sign under the current player contract which would mean he would have to be respectful of his social media use"

STORYLINE:
Rugby Australia Chief Executive Raelene Castle says she will not step down as boss of Rugby Australia following the drawn out legal fight with former star fullback Israel Folau.
The two parties agreed to an undisclosed settlement yesterday (Wednesday) with some reports suggesting the figure was as high as eight million dollars (AUD), a number that Castle strongly denied on Thursday.
The dispute comes following Folau's social media activity earlier this year where he was alleged to have posted homophobic content, something that the 74-Test Wallaby denied, instead declaring it was just his religious beliefs.
"We didn't back down. What I just said is right, we needed to give the game cost certainty. The feedback we were getting from our Rugby community was that they wanted this matter settled. They want to go into the New Year knowing that they can go in with a clean slate and start talking about Rugby again instead of talking about this case," Raelene Castle said.
The settlement avoids what could have been an embarrassing court appearance in February next year, with current and former players set to be called to the stand to testify on both sides of the debate.
The costly legal battle and subsequent settlement is only exacerbated by the fact that Folau was re-signed to a rich new four-year deal just months before the social media furore erupted.
That's the agreement that I believe we had but ultimately it wasn't the case," Castle said.
While unlikely, the Rugby Australia boss didn't shut the door completely on a return to Rugby for Folau.
"Well never say never right because that would be crazy for me to say that. What we have is a value 'dis-alignment' if that's the right word, and at the end of the day I don't believe that he would sign under the current player contract which would mean he would have to be respectful of his social media use," Castle said.
