STORYLINE:
Department of Defense official Laura Cooper and David Hale, the No. 3 State Department official, testified late Wednesday evening as part of Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.
It was the fourth of five impeachment hearings this week.
Cooper testified that her staff had given her new information that the Ukrainian Embassy had asked about military aid in July, earlier than was previously known.
She also testified that the Defense Department had certified that Ukraine had met its anti-corruption standards, a pre-condition to having the aid released.
Democrats are investigating President Donald Trump’s requests that Ukraine investigate Democrats as the U.S. was withholding that security assistance.
US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale defended former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.
Yovanovitch was recalled after a smear campaign by Rudy Guiliani, President Trump’s personal lawyer.
