LIZZO, TAYLOR SWIFT AND BEYONCE, ARYA AND MAISEL AMONG TRENDING NAMES FOR PETS IN 2019
Are you getting a new pet in 2020 but can't think of a name? If you're stuck for ideas, your music streaming app might be a great place to start.
"What we found this year is that people are naming their dogs after popular musicians," said Rover.com's pet trends expert Kate Jaffe.
"The name Lizzo is up 100 percent year-over-year for dogs. Names like Taylor Swift was up 400 percent this year after Taylor Swift had a really big year - even names like Beyonce, Ariana (Grande) all trending up this year."
Popular television shows also inspired names for four legged companions.
"The TV shows that we binge watch are really influential on how we name our dogs and cats. This year we found that the name Maisel, influenced by 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,' was trending up year-over-year by quite a bit. We also found 'Game of Thrones' names were very popular for dog and cat owners, with Arya Stark as the No. 1 Game of Thrones influenced named for cat people," said Jaffe.
Jaffe adds that owners like to name their pooches and feline friends after favorite drinks - but that cats are more likely to share names with beverages than dogs.
"Wesaw dogs named "Rose" trending up this year. We also found that cats were more likely to be named after caffeinated drinks and alcohol. So drinks like mocha, cappuccino or Kahlua are more popular as cat names."
Rover.com also released a pet-related holiday shopping report.
"This year, pet parents are increasingly likely to buy a gift for their pet. Dogs, and cats are part of the family at this point, and the majority of pet parents are planning on getting their pet a gift," said Jaffe - adding that if you have a pet in your family, you may be the one coming up short during Christmas.
"We've also found that as dogs are considered more and more like our children, one in five dogs is actually going to get more gifts than humans in their family."
Jaffe says as pets become more "humanized," owners will continue to give names that reflect their own, as well as their pet's, personality.
She predicts pets named in 2020 to reflect "major pop cultural moments."
"The movies that are nominated for Academy Awards, the other trends that pop up - because we will likely see corresponding spikes in dogs inspired by those moments in pop culture."
According to Rover, the Top Pet Names 2019 report was developed by Rover between September and October 2019. Results are based on analysis of millions of user-submitted pet names provided by owners on Rover.com. Secondary data was collected by a Rover survey conducted via Pollfish among 1,500 U.S. adult pet owners in October 2019.
Other highlights from Rover's report:
• 80% of pet parents plan to purchase their pets a gift this holiday season
• Two-thirds of pet parents have a stocking for their pets
• Luna, Bella, and Oliver came in as the top three cat names in 2019
• Marijuana-inspired names like Budder, Dank, Doobie, Blaze, and Kush are on the rise for our dogs and Kush, Doobie, and Blaze are trending for cats.
• Meghan Markle was up 42 percent this year compared to other royals of her generation, but Diana and Queen Elizabeth still take the crown in terms of popularity
