STORYLINE:
A small but growing number of veterans around the country are turning to beekeeping as a potential treatment for mental health conditions such as anxiety and PTSD.
Veterans Affairs has begun offering beekeeping at a few facilities around the country including in New Hampshire, and researchers are beginning to study whether the practice has therapeutic benefits.
There is very little hard data to back up reports from veterans that beekeeping helps them focus, relax and become more productive.
But vets such as Vince Ylitalo swear by the activity.
"It helps me think about something completely different. I don't even think about pain any more.
I'm just thinking about the bees," said Ylitalo, who has battled PTSD after serving nearly 40 years in the military including two tours in Iraq.
Standing nearby in a her white bee suit, Army veteran Wendi Zimmermann said bees have helped her deal with the anxiety she feels outside her home, even though she initially was fearful of being stung.
While some programs are geared to helping veterans with PTSD, others like one in Michigan have a broader mandate.
They offer beekeeping as a fun hobby for veterans or train them to start their own beekeeping business.
Relief from PTSD or anxiety is an added benefit.
"We're focused on empowering veterans to take control of not only their own lives, both from a health respect by being able to practice mindfulness and slow down, but also by giving them the opportunity to have their own business and maybe capture some supplemental income, which is really important for a lot of folks," said Adam Ingrao (in-GRAY'-oh), a fourth-generation soldier who runs Heroes to Hives through Michigan State University Extension.
The program provides a free nine-month beekeeping course to veterans, about 80 percent of whom have some kind of disability.
Ford Motor Co. is providing space to Heroes to Hives at Henry Ford's old farm near Ann Arbor.
"You're with fellow veterans that you can relate to and that understand what you've gone through. And that's really important, because a lot of us feel isolated when we leave the military, because we feel like others just can't understand what we've seen," Ingrao said. "So, this is a place for community.
This is a place for healing. It's also a place for learning how to keep bees."
