Over the past few days, marchers and their supporters inflicted extensive damage to different shopping centres where families were enjoying their holidays. But their holiday mood was ruined by the destructive and selfish acts of rioters who went on a rampage in malls in Tai Po, Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. They stormed these stopping centres to vandalise target shops and restaurants and to harass diners and shoppers, young and old. Their scheme is to silence those who hold dissenting views and to terrorise the public. Whoever disagrees with their violence will be met with violence. This has thrown our city into a state of black terror. The whole society is living in constant fear. Everyone can be the next victim of this black terror. Not only are these masked rioters brutal, they are also shameful. Shame on them for committing crime and hoping to escape legal liability. Police officers are duty-bound to enter shopping malls to enforce the law, to protect members of the public and to bring offenders to justice."

"Apart from shopping malls, busy streets in Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok once again became trouble zones where rioters recklessly damaged public facilities including MTR (Mass Transit Railway) stations, traffic lights and electricity panels. They even set fire to banks and hurled petrol bombs at police officers and vehicles. This violence poses a grave threat to residential neighbourhoods."

"Since June, there has been a clutter of fake news on the internet and even mainstream media, as some people used misinformation to discredit the police and to defend rioters. For example, one man who fell from height said he didn't want to so-called 'disappear' from the world. Such ridiculous thinking shows he has been brainwashed and indoctrinated with anti-police hatred. The police always work under the legal framework and follow the law closely by carrying out our legal duties, Once we have sufficient evidence to prosecute a case, our work and investigation are also subject to strict scrutiny of the court. Indeed, many arrested people have come to accept our handling of their cases as professional and sensible. It's vital that we talk sense to those who have been brainwashed and misled by fake news and misinformation. We should restore a rational dialogue, and that dialogue will replace division."

STORYLINE:
Hong Kong police said on Friday that people in the territory were living in a state of "black terror" amid continuing protests.
Chief police spokesman Kwok Ka-chuen condemned what he called attacks on ordinary citizens at shopping centres and restaurants, and vandalism of public infrastructure including subway stations, banks and the electrical grid.
“Their scheme is to silence those who hold dissenting views and to terrorize the public. Whoever disagrees with their violence will be met with violence," Kwok told reporters.
He strongly defended the police against criticism of their tactics, saying they always acted according to the law.
The police arrested 336 people during the Christmas holiday, bringing the number of people detained over the course of six months of protests to nearly 7,000.
The protests demanding greater democratic rights show no sign of dissipating following an overwhelming victory by anti-establishment candidates in elections for district representatives earlier this month.
