Paris - 26 July 2019
1. Wide of inventor and pilot of 'flyboard' Franky Zapata sitting down at table for news conference
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Franky Zapata, Inventor and pilot of 'flyboard':
"For the first 20 kilometres I was in a conscience that I'd never been, far from the coast so the wind was really regular. It was almost as when I flew inside. No turbulences, nothing. It was just like flying in a dream so yes it was an amazing sensation. At the beginning, I didn't even see England. So I was like alone, alone above the sea. It's impossible to describe."
Journalist: "Sounds scary?"
"No, not scary at all. It was just like a dream."

4. SOUNDBITE (French) Franky Zapata, Inventor and pilot of 'flyboard':
"In fact, as I approached the platform, the boat hit a wave and it caused the bar I had to grab to come forward and because the platform is not very big and I was getting closer, it hit the feet of the machine. It broke them. It threw me forward. I think I had a bad reflex – I should have accelerated and left. I tried to grab the bar and I just started to swing – left, right, left, right. Another poor reflex: I didn't let go of the accelerator at the right moment and I fell in the water."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Franky Zapata, Inventor and pilot of 'flyboard':
"The problem is the helmet – it's not built in this way (designed for this). Because it's not something that we expect every day, we didn't experience that before but we have to build a system that we can quickly release because the water goes in and then, the only way to be able to breathe was to drink the water in my helmet in order to breathe again."

8. SOUNDBITE (French) Franky Zapata, Inventor and pilot of 'flyboard':
"I was angry at myself. It wasn't really anger. It was more disappointment. It's just that when you get this close, it's always hard to swallow. But I've spent my entire life doing sports. You work to become world champion but there's only one! Sometimes it's you. Sometimes it's the other guy. You have to accept that and learn from your mistakes. That's the challenge."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Franky Zapata, Inventor and pilot of 'flyboard':
"To rebuild it (the flyboard), it would take just a day and then one or two days to reorganize the system like rent, find another boat – a bigger one. And then we have to do again and prove the safety again with all the French entities and the English entities to prove that everything is in place in a good way and let's go."
Journalist: "It could be a matter of weeks, months?"
"It could be a matter of days."

STORYLINE:
ZAPATA VOWS FURTHER ATTEMPT TO FLY ACROSS CHANNEL
Looking like a superhero, a French aviation buff and inventor glided partway over the English Channel on a homemade "flyboard" Thursday - and then he crashed in the sea.
Undeterred, he plans to try again.
Perhaps within days.
Just a few hours after colliding with a refuelling boat, destroying his beloved board and being rescued from choppy waters, Franky Zapata smiled and said it could be a matter of days before he flies again.
After careful preparations, Zapata took off from the French coastal town of Sangatte fastened to the small flying platform he designed.
From afar, it looked like he was skateboarding on the sky.
"It was an amazing sensation," he told reporters later of the experience.
"I was flying. It was like a dream."
Reaching speeds up to 177 kilometres an hour, he made it some 20 kilometres (12 miles), more than halfway to the English shore.
That's farther than he had ever travelled on the flyboard.
But as he descended for a refuelling stop on a boat, the platform he was meant to land on was moving too much due to waves.
He wasn't able to grab onto it, and he plunged into the sea.
He winced as he later described the "disaster."
His helmet filled with water, and he struggled for breath.
But he was rescued by French divers and came away with just a scratch on his arm.
"It's hard to swallow," he acknowledged. But he said that as a former jet ski champion, he knows how to "learn from your mistakes."
He plans to go back to his workshop as soon as Friday and said he can build a new board and prepare a new trip possibly within days.
Zapata had hoped to make it across 36 kilometres (22.4 miles) to the Dover area in southeast England in about 20 minutes.
He was carrying a power pack full of kerosene, and was planning to refuel from a boat partway across.
Zapata, 40, wowed crowds in Paris on Bastille Day, whirling over European leaders on the flyboard.
But crossing the windy, ship-filled Channel is a much tougher challenge.
He scheduled Thursday's flight to coincide with the 110th anniversary of the first flight across the Channel, by French aviator Louis Bleriot on July 25, 1909 - who also left from Sangatte.
The beach where Zapata took off Thursday bears Bleriot's name.
Noting that Bleriot also had several failed flying attempts, Zapata said, "Aviation is made by people who make failures and advance by rising again."
