2. SOUNDBITE (English) Guy Ritchie, director, on how he chose his two lead actors:
"I can try and capture that in one word, and that was charisma. That was my principal concern was just having a couple of actors that not only could you feel the chemistry between them but independently, the charisma should win you over, as it were. Some clever director one said 'the lion's share of directing is casting' and in a small part I think that's true. So it was trying to find these two people that you want to spend time with and you want to watch . It's a tricky role too because you've got to sing, you've got to dance, you've got to act. And you got to be charismatic. Charisma is, you know, quite rare when it comes if you want it in generous quantities."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Naomi Scott, on the new Jasmine being a feminist:
"As you said, like, feminism is about, just equality, right? And equal opportunity. And I think Jasmine in this movie, she's just saying 'I can lead, you know, just because I'm a woman, I still have all the skills of leadership and I am the right person.' So that's really what it's about. She's also fighting against injustice and fighting for the peace of her people, right, and the kingdom and I think that is what drives her. So I think it's just about her being human and more well-rounded and which is a natural progression when you're taking something from an animation and turning it into a live action."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Mena Massoud, on how the film remains intimate despite the large-scale production:
This film has a lot to do with the relationship, even though Aladdin does spend quite a bit of time on his own, he still does have the carpet and Abu and those are all living and breathing relationships. So just focusing on the connection between characters is I think what makes it special."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Naomi Scott, on breaking down glass ceiling for women in Hollywood:
"I love that we are beginning to kind of break these glass ceilings, or these things that, these myths that have been around. We just had 'Captain Marvel,' which was a female lead and it made a billion dollars. 'Beauty and the Beast,' similarly, and 'Wonder Woman' and all of these movies that are busting those myths and are really showcasing the idea that that is what people want to see, and actually people do want to see diversity and they do want to see female characters being central in a narrative. And I think that is the important thing just seeing stories about women and also having women behind the scenes as well and directing and writing and in everywhere. I think that always leads to more authentic stories."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Mena Massoud, on breaking down glass ceiling for under-represented ethnic groups in Hollywood:
"You know it's a difficult question because at the end of the day, Hollywood is a business and like any business it runs off supply and demand. So what we tried to do with this film is represent as many cultures and people of color and ethnic groups as possible, and women as well. So hopefully the film does well and that's a sign to Hollywood that films like this can succeed and do well and I think we just have to keep fighting for representation. It's not enough to succeed at representing one particular group of people, but we need to strive to represent all groups, all ethnicities, all genders."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Guy Ritchie, on how Hollywood can keep up momentum of increasing diversity for women and minorities:
"My job is to be as honest to the authenticity of what this movie is. So that's really my job. I am not the industry. I am a film director and I just have a small brain and through my small brain, I see small windows and I can take a peek through those windows and then through that, I go, 'I can see a world' and then I have to try and illustrate that world authentically to the DNA of the narrative."

STORYLINE:
ALADDIN CAST AND DIRECTOR ON HOW HOLLYWOOD CAN BREAK DOWN FEMINIST AND DIVERSITY AND WALLS IN HOLLYWOOD
It has been 27 years since Disney released the animation Aladdin to the thrill of audiences around the world.
The political climate in 2019 is a much different temperature than it was in 1992 and while the live-action remake is still for both children and adults, writer-director Guy Ritchie and the studio took active steps to ensure diversity and a strong female role were represented in the movie.
For one, the new Jasmine, played by British actress Naomi Scott, wants to take over leadership after her father steps down and become sultan, which wasn't part of the narrative in the original movie.
Scott says she doesn't see it as unusual but rather as something that is obvious in today's world.
"I think Jasmine in this movie, she's just saying 'I can lead, you know, just because I'm a woman, I still have all the skills of leadership and I am the right person.' So that's really what it's about. She's also fighting against injustice and fighting for the peace of her people, right, and the kingdom and I think that is what drives her. So I think it's just about her being human and more well-rounded and which is a natural progression."
The movie stars Mena Massoud, an Egyptian-Canadian, and he says while the film addresses some diversity issues in Hollywood, there's always more that can be done.
"You know it's a difficult question because at the end of the day, Hollywood is a business and like any business it runs off supply and demand. So what we tried to do with this film is represent as many cultures and people of color and ethnic groups as possible, and women as well."
He added: "So hopefully the film does well and that's a sign to Hollywood that films like this can succeed and do well and I think we just have to keep fighting for representation. It's not enough to succeed at representing one particular group of people, but we need to strive to represent all groups, all ethnicities, all genders."
Ritchie, who first made his mark with edgy British gangster films "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch", said it wasn't his job to speak about the issue, but to use his talent as a director to ensure the diversity question continues to get answered in Hollywood.
"My job is to be as honest to the authenticity of what this movie is. So that's really my job. I am not the industry. I am a film director and I just have a small brain and through my small brain, I see small windows and I can take a peek through those windows and through that, I go I can see a world and then I have to try and illustrate that world authentically to the DNA of the narrative."
