1. 00:00 SOUNDBITE (English) Novak Djokovic, ret. against Stan Wawrinka, 6-4 7-5 2-1:
"Look, I congratulate Stan. He's a great player. I really wish him all the best the rest of the tournament. I don't want to talk about my injuries. I said that in the past. I'm sticking to that. I know, but I retired and I told you it's left shoulder. I have nothing more to talk about."
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Novak Djokovic, ret. against Stan Wawrinka, 6-4 7-5 2-1:
"Look, I'm not being offended by, you know, mistreated by anybody. I don't really, you know, pay too much attention on that. You know, I like to respect others. I hope that others can respect me and my decision. I'm sorry for the crowd. Obviously they came to see a full match, and just wasn't to be. That's all it is. I mean, a lot of people didn't know what's happening, so you cannot blame them. It is what it is."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Novak Djokovic, ret. against Stan Wawrinka, 6-4 7-5 2-1:
" Yeah, it is frustrating (smiling). Very frustrating. Obviously not the first, not the last player to get injured and to, you know, withdraw from one of the biggest events in sport. But obviously I just came off the court, so of course it hurts."
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Stan Wawrinka, def. Novak Djokovic, 6-4 7-5 2-1 (ret.):
"I'm super happy with the level to be here in front of you winning tonight. For sure it's very special to play the No. 1 player in the world. Sorry he had to retire to finish the game like that, but for me, most important is the way I'm playing, the way I'm moving. Tonight I think was really high level. That's the most important."
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Stan Wawrinka, def. Novak Djokovic, 6-4 7-5 2-1 (ret.):
"For me, my sense, I was feeling good on the court. I was playing well. The more the match was going, better I was playing, I was hitting really hard the ball. I was feeling great on the court. That's the most important. For sure I could see some little thing that he was in trouble. But I was most likely, most of the time, focused on myself because I know how well he can fight. I know how well he can come back. Doesn't matter how he's feeling on the court, and that's what I was focusing on."
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Stan Wawrinka, def. Novak Djokovic, 6-4 7-5 2-1 (ret.):
"Yeah. Always surprised when you play the No. 1 and you hear the fans booing him when he had to retire, that's for sure. Again, he's a good friend. I know him really well. He's amazing champion, and if he has to retire, it's not the best for a tennis player to have to leave the court like that."

STORYLINE:
Reactions from Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka after the U.S. Open's defending champion and No. 1 seed retired trailing 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 during their match on Sunday (1st September).
Djokovic had won 36 of his past 37 Grand Slam matches, and four of the last five major titles, in one of the most dominant stretches the sport has seen. That pushed his Slam trophy total to 16, moving within four of Roger Federer's record 20, and within two of Rafael Nadal's 18.
Djokovic entered the night with a 19-5 head-to-head edge against Wawrinka across their careers. This, though, was their first meeting since the 2016 U.S. Open final, won by Wawrinka.
According to the ATP, this was the 13th mid-match retirement of Djokovic's career, his sixth at a Grand Slam tournament.
Wawrinka will face Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.
