STORYLINE:
Baghdad's streets were deserted on the second day of a curfew imposed by the government following four days of demonstrations that have spread across many provinces in the country.
Few protesters were still camping near Tayaran square in Baghdad that on Thursday witnessed clashes between protesters and security forces.
Protesters were expressing their anger and despair over the economic situation in Iraq, one the richest oil countries in the world.
A protester who refused to give his name said "all my brothers and relatives have graduated from universities but are jobless so why I should study if there is no future?"
Iraq's premier on Friday sent a message to anti-government protesters, saying their "legitimate demands" have been heard.
In his televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi urged protesters to go home while also comparing security measures imposed in the wake of this week's violence, including a curfew, to "bitter medicine" that needs to be swallowed.
Another protester said the speech was "all lies, he is not able to do anything, his speech is a drug for the people, aiming for protesters to go back but we will not."
The streets of Baghdad were littered with tear gas canisters and empty bullet casings on Friday.
Smoke from burned tires rose above the streets as protesters tried to prevent security forces from advancing.
The rallies have erupted spontaneously, mostly spurred by youths wanting jobs, improved services such as electricity and water, and an end to endemic corruption in the oil-rich country
The unrest is the most serious challenge for Mahdi's year-old government, which also has been caught in the middle of increasing US-Iran tensions in the region.
Iraq is allied with both countries and hosts thousands of US troops, as well as powerful paramilitary forces allied with Iran.
