"OnePlus started as being a real aggressive challenger brand, they were packing good features into new products at a punchy price point. We're seeing them coming of age a little bit with these launches where they're trying to nudge up into a more premium space, but they're coupling that with some great new features on the camera, on the screen, but also adding in 5G, which is going to be the kind of flagship product for them."

"It's a challenging time for Chinese phone makers, we've seen the difficulties that Huawei have had, getting excluded from the U.S. market. Other companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus have high hopes that they can get into the U.S. market. But given the current geopolitical situation, it's got to be tough for them to look at that as a growth area right now."

LEADIN:
Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus is bringing 5G connectivity to its latest handset, the pop-up camera OnePlus 7 Pro.
The new OnePlus 7 Pro 5G smartphone will be available exclusively on BT's EE mobile network in the UK and Elisa in Finland.
STORYLINE:
Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus is showing its new 5G-ready handset to the world. Staging three simultaneous press events in London, New York and Bengaluru in India.
In London, the company's CEO, Peter Lau, shows the new smartphone flanked by chiefs from network provider Qualcomm and telecommunications company BT (British Telecom).
"This is a truly historic moment. Now, I would like to officially announce that OnePlus, together Qualcomm and EE are launching the very first OnePlus 5G smartphone," says Lau.
Chinese brand OnePlus is launching three different variants of its new "7" handset.
The premium "Pro" version comes with a QHD+ AMOLED display, featuring about 4.49 million pixels. It lets users watch high-definition HDR10 and HDR10+ content.
Its new triple camera features a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens that claims a 117-degree field of view.
There's also a new 48-megapixel main lens and 8-megapixel telephoto lens, which helps users take arty profile pictures.
"In one and single camera, you now have an ultra-wide-angle lens, the main lens, and the telephoto lens," says Akis Evangelidis, the vice president of OnePlus France.
"It's basically an entire camera bag that fits right into a pocket."
In a bid to boost screen size and avoid a camera "notch" on the top of the screen, the OnePlus 7 Pro features a pop-up 16-megapixel "selfie" camera.
To ensure it doesn't snap off when dropped, OnePlus programmed the phone's gyroscope and accelerometer to "sense" if the phone is falling and recoil the pop-up camera instantly.
"Not only it's really cool, but it's also very durable. We've actually tested it continuously for 300,000 times," says Evangelidis.
OnePlus is debuting its 5G-ready handset as the mobile industry races towards next-generation, ultra-fast wireless networks.
Chinese competitors Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO have all already showcased 5G-enabled devices.
In the UK, consumers will soon be able to use the smartphone on EE's new 5G network, starting in six cities - including London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast - and expanding further later this year.
"We at EE will be switching on 5G in six cities across the UK very, very soon. And soon after switching on ten more," says Marc Allera, CEO of Consumer Brands at BT.
"And we'll be bringing faster speeds, more capacity, more reliability, better experiences for our customers in the busiest places, in the busiest cities across the country."
It might not be a name that many in Europe are familiar with, but Shenzen-based OnePlus have carved a significant market share in recent years.
The brand claimed the fifth biggest premium smartphone market share last year, based on devices priced $400 USD or higher, according to Counterpoint Research.
It amassed a two percent premium market share in 2018. By comparison, Apple's iPhone claimed a dominating 51 percent stake.
"OnePlus started as being a real aggressive challenger brand, they were packing good features into new products at a punchy price point," says Ben Wood, a mobile analyst for CCS Insight.
"We're seeing them coming of age a little bit with these launches where they're trying to nudge up into a more premium space, but they're coupling that with some great new features on the camera, on the screen, but also adding in 5G, which is going to be the kind of flagship product for them."
But Wood says OnePlus may face challenges selling their devices in the United States, just as fellow Chinese brand Huawei has encountered.
"It's a challenging time for Chinese phone makers, we've seen the difficulties that Huawei have had, getting excluded from the U.S. market. Other companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus have high hopes that they can get into the U.S. market. But given the current geopolitical situation, it's got to be tough for them to look at that as a growth area right now," he says.
OnePlus is yet to announce pricing and availability for its new 5G handset.
The premium OnePlus 7 Pro device will go on sale across Europe from 16 May. In the UK, it starts from 649 British pounds (approx. $840 USD).
