LEADIN:
Foldable phones, the growth of esports and cashier-less stores - tech grew even further into our lives in 2019.
But, in some cases, perhaps too far - in Israel, authorities installed "zombie traffic lights" to keep smartphone-addicted pedestrians safe.
STORYLINE:
Digital detoxing, sleep assistants and a more relaxed attitude to technology were some of the big trends at January's CES in Las Vegas.
Several companies were showing products what they claimed would help users fall asleep and others that would limit smartphone usage.
"It's not very sexy to say unplug, but there's a lot of companies trying to figure out the best way for you to have a relationship with your tech," said Nicole Scott from Mobile Geeks technology website.
Elsewhere, a foldable smartphone, the FlexPai, was being shown at CES in Las Vegas.
"It looks like a traditional smartphone, but the difference is you can unfold it and back to a pad," explained Bill Liu, founder of Royole.
The Royole phone led the way for many more bendable devices to be released in 2019.
Get ready to say good riddance to the checkout line.
A year after Amazon opened its first cashier-less store, startups and retailers were racing to get similar technology in other stores throughout the world, letting shoppers buy groceries without waiting in line.
Chinese communications company Huawei launched its foldable 5G smartphone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The Huawei Mate X has a dual external screen that folds out to become an eight-inch tablet.
At this year's MWC, 5G connectivity could be found in everything, from robots, to games and drone taxis.
But as the 5G network was rolled out across many countries worldwide, there were concerns about security and heated debate about which companies could be trusted to build and operate the communications network.
"We are looking at billions of new devices being connected to the network. And that's going to take networks that can handle vast numbers of connections," said Andrew Parker, program marketing director at the GSMA.
Tel Aviv got new lights in March, but they wouldn't light up the sky, they lit up the ground.
Local authorities hoped they would enlighten the minds of pedestrians, too busy with their mobile devices to pay attention to nearby traffic.
So-called "zombie pedestrians", often glued to their smartphones, are known to walk into other people, lamp posts and, most dangerously, vehicles.
"I don't know about the name zombie lights, but I think it's probably (because) we all become some kind of zombies, that we're looking at our phones all the time," said Tel Aviv resident Dana Kemper.
Drones were doing battle in a boxing-style bout, held in the Dutch coastal town of Katwijk.
But organisers said there was a serious side too - helping researchers develop effective defences against rogue drones.
"First we weren't in the finals, then we got into the finals, and now somehow, we won it," said Victor "Carbon V" Van Der Elst from winning team Slunse.
In April, far from glitzy tech hubs, one Chinese city was betting big on virtual reality.
A VR theme park in central China's Nanchang offered 42 rides and exhibits, from VR bumper cars to VR shoot 'em ups.
Microsoft Xbox said its next console, codenamed "Project Scarlett", would launch in late 2020, with "Halo Infinite" as its first title.
The new console, announced at E3 in Los Angeles, will have 8K capability and ultra-low latency input, promising a new level of immersion.
In what could have been a scene from a superhero movie, three men wearing special jet suits took to London's skies in June.
The inventor of the special flight-enabling suit wanted to create a new sport, whereby participants race in the air over bodies of water all over the world.
"If you imagine a bunch of guys and girls for different sporting backgrounds, assembling in water locations like this all over the world - I think that could be a spectacular sport," said Richard Browning, founder of Gravity Industries.
Niantic, creators of popular mobile game "Pokemon Go", said their eagerly anticipated Harry Potter-themed follow up would launch in June.
"Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" is a real-world, augmented reality mobile game inspired by J.K. Rowling's wizarding world.
In June, conservationists at London Zoo said they had helped a plant "take its own selfie" photographs.
When the maidenhair fern photosynthesizes, it produces sugars that enter the soil and are then broken down by bacteria, this generates energy. That energy was then harnessed by four microbial fuel cells.
The development could be crucial in fighting accelerating extinction, which looms over one million species of plants and animals, according to a U.N. report.
"The rainforest could monitor its own productivity, its own processes and that's fascinating to me that plants can look after plants," said Alasdair Davies, conservation technologist at ZSL London Zoo.
Tech efforts to make artificial intelligence fairer extended to Wimbledon's courts in July.
The famed British tennis event added technology enhancements to this year's tournament aimed at eliminating bias from automatically generated video highlights.
Swatting mosquitoes got a bit easier in August.
An Israeli company developed a compact laser system that detected and tracked the pests and alerted homeowners to their presence.
Gamers got their hands-on Google's much-anticipated Stadia cloud-streaming service at Cologne's Gamescom, although some remained unconvinced.
"You have to get this in stores or into people's hands so they can show their friends, and that's going to be a tough market to crack," said Destin Legarie, senior features producer at IGN.
East Berlin came alive again, almost 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Visitors to a new Time Ride exhibition, located near Checkpoint Charlie in the German capital, could take a virtual tour of East Berlin before the fall of the wall.
Samsung said it would start selling its highly anticipated folding smartphone in September.
The original launch date of the Galaxy Fold was delayed by months because of embarrassing problems with the screen.
"When consumers get that in their hands to be experiencing it for themselves, they'll soon forget about anything they've heard before," said Mark Notton from Samsung Europe.
In September, Apple unveiled new iPhones that were largely unchanged from previous models and accompanied by an unexpected price cut for the cheapest model.
New iPhone cameras were intended to appeal to the growing number of people who use phones to take pictures of themselves, friends, family and the places they go.
A number of U.S. and British universities were starting degree programmes in esports, in the latest sign of the industry boom in competitive multiplayer video gaming.
The new degrees weren't about playing games, but rather business courses, teaching marketing and management skills with an esports angle.
"If you were to go and study to be a director of football, you're not playing football, but you're learning the business behind it," said lecturer Matt Huxley.
Tech experts said they were unsure whether Huawei's new Mate 30 series of smartphones would be a success without popular Google apps, such as Chrome or YouTube.
Huawei, the world's second-biggest smartphone maker, was fighting to save its business after the Trump administration blocked access to U.S. components and technology in May on national security grounds.
A London bar was using facial recognition technology to stop drinkers jumping the queue when waiting to be served in October.
The aim was to ensure everyone got their drink on a first come, first served basis, but privacy campaigners warned it "trivialised a dangerous surveillance technology".
A scheme to help elderly and disabled people cross the road safely was proving a success in Singapore.
New smart crossings allowed pedestrians up to 13 seconds extra to get across the road.
Google unveiled a new Pixel smartphone and other hardware devices, all aimed at getting people even more reliant on its artificial-intelligence services.
The Pixel 4 phone promised to respond to AI queries even faster than before.
An augmented reality app was letting people see the Berlin Wall, 30 years after it was torn down.
The app showed how the Berlin Wall changed over time, from a relatively low structure to the towering concrete barrier that divided east and west.
World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee released an ambitious rule book for governing online conduct.
It's a bill of rights and obligations for the internet - designed to counteract the growing prevalence of misinformation, mass surveillance and government censorship.
With elections in the UK and United States fast approaching when Berners-Lee spoke to the Associated Press in November, he said he believed targeted political advertising should not be on social media platforms.
"It would be great if there were no targeted political advertising during the election season in the UK, for example, and the election season in the US," he said.
A team of pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong created a virtual reality game offering a first-person immersive experience as a frontline protester.
"Liberate Hong Kong" had already been downloaded thousands of times and its developers hoped it would help address criticism of the protesters.
Competitive video gaming, or Esports as it's known, debuted as a medal event at the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines.
Competitors said the event could be a springboard to gaming appearing at other international events, perhaps even the Olympic Games one day.
"It's just amazing how far esports has come to even make through to the SEA games and eventually ASEAN games, and maybe even one day in the Olympics," said Thomas Maria Kopankiewic from the Singapore esports team.
