2. SOUNDBITE (English) Adwoa Aboah, model and activist - on the two outfits her doll wears to portray the two different parts of her working life:
"Like, this moment in time, I think something that shows that great comparison is, like, winning Model of the Year last year, and although it's completely different to the work I do with Gurls Talk, I feel like it aligns very well, and so I chose the outfit that I wore at the awards which Michael Halpern made. And then her casual wear is the Gurls Talk T-shirt, so again, it's just like a perfect, a perfect representation, again, of, like, my two worlds and the importance of those two worlds to me."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Adwoa Aboah, model and activist:
"You know, it's been so lovely, obviously because I've seen the process through email and now to have been here and have met everyone who's been, who's been part of creating my Barbie - it's, it's just so nice. Like, them not knowing me and them taking into account all the things that make me me in terms of, like, my tattoos and my earrings and the shape of my head and the freckles and the skin complexion, and it's, it's, it's wonderful to know that although they've never met me, they've taken such great pleasure in making sure that it's a perfect kind of representation of who I am."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Adwoa Aboah, model and activist:
"I just think representation is key. I think it was something that I was lacking when growing up. It's so important in all, like, media and all, and all imagery to be able to base yourself on something, to be able to realize that there's someone out there that, that kind of, that's doing something you might want to do, that, like, looks like you."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Adwoa Aboah, model and activist:
"So the reality is that between five and seven, girls stop realizing their potential and I'm so happy to part of this team, this, this wonderful team that's really trying to close that Dream Gap and, and show that it's not OK."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Adwoa Aboah, model and activist:
"So I'd like girls looking at my Barbie to take away something that I really, like, hold true to myself - that is, like, honesty and however hard it is, and how many times you feel like you kind of just want to jump out of your skin, to, like, stay true to yourself, because I never thought any of this would be possible."

STORYLINE:
BRITISH MODEL AND ACTIVIST ADWOA ABOAH HONORED WITH ROLE MODEL BARBIE
Mattel honored British model and activist Adwoa Aboah by unveiling a Barbie doll likeness Wednesday (6 MARCH 2019), just ahead of International Women's Day on Friday.
Aboah checked out her new Role Model Barbie and spoke to its creators at Mattel HQ in Los Angeles recently.
In her modeling career, Aboah was the first cover star of Edward Enninful's Vogue magazine in the U.K. As an activist, she is the founder of Gurls Talk, an online platform for young women and girls to share their experiences and discuss issues such as mental health, education, self care and relationships in a safe and trusting environment.
London-born Aboah, who's the daughter of an English mother and Ghanian father, is due to appear on a panel with Meghan Markle to talk about women's issues on International Women's Day.
Aboah's Barbie doll has two looks in order to represent her two worlds of fashion and activism.
Her first outfit is based on her look when accepting the British Fashion Council Model of the Year 2017 Award, with the doll wearing an homage to the Michael Halpern dress, a Stephen Jones Millinery for Halpern turban, and Christian Louboutin shoes worn by Aboah. The doll's casual look is a Gurls Talk T-shirt and leopard print skirt.
The toy maker has launched the "Dream Gap Project Fund," a global initiative to raise awareness around factors that prevent girls from reaching their full potential. Research has shown that starting at the age of five, many girls are less likely than boys to view their own gender as clever and begin to lose confidence in their own competence. This is termed the "Dream Gap."
